computer for parents

hi!
i would like to get some mini itx system for my parents

i want to get them i5 7400 or 7500, i'm not taking into consideration any new pentium or i3
and no graphics card needed

what mobo/ram combo would you recommend?

also, i would like some neat case with it
i like dell optiplex 3040 sff case

if someone has time to make full specs list, for the system, not including the processor, budget is $400
so: mobo, ram, ssd, case and psu

Used is likely the only way to go, so I doubt you will get Kaby in there. What do you your parents do they need such cpu borsepower. Why not buy new with slightly less horsepower???

You cannot fit new i5-based system and reasonable size SSD into 400$ budget. Core i3 is not a bad CPU and it surely can handle pretty much everything that average user does with PC. Your best option is some used mini ITX system.

I think the $400 is everything but the CPU, which should be quite possible. Have you seen the Deskmini 110?

Deskmini 110 - $150
Samsung Evo 850 250GB - $100
GSkill 8GB Ram - $55
Total: $305

Almost a hundred extra to spend on another HDD or just add a new Kaby Lake Pentium. They are dual core with hyperthreading now, and unless your parents really need the extra CPU power, there's a whole system under $400.

I guess since you listed no processor you might have the processor, or have the money for it apart, let us know if you need moar,
also considering an i3 as processor you could add a single and lower tier video card, for having a complete build that could do better for movies, videos and other visuals,

That's near the one I'm planning to build for my cousin's birthday.
Everyone, including his fiancee, is trying hard to make him get rid of an abominable Carrizo laptop (which boots to windows in just under 10 minutes now) and get a normal desktop workstation...

Small side note: you can get rid of Noctua L9i, if you are planning on buying a T-version of i5. Simply use a box HSF.

This build is similar to mine (also uITX), except I do have enough space for a dedicated GPU and a full-size ATX PSU.

Edit: I truly don't see a reason to build a system for this purpose. A prebuilt will be about the same cost and come with a 1-800 customer service number.

cuz a 500W unit, certified and great quality unit can be used for years and paired with a great video card upgrade in the future, making this rig a bit moar future proof, thats why i listed it,
my two cents...

For case, something slim but it should have the possibility to stay up, i would not like matx case

If its itx with 2 ram slots, 2x4gb is a no go

Edit: prebuilt lenovo and dell are ok, but they use proprietary components and i'm trying to avoid that
Also, they use 6th gen processors which is like buying old model car when you can have the new one

It is, for now. It is easier to add one more stick than changing to 2 new sticks

no sense... runing 1 stick no dual channel for moar speed, also 2X4GB its a quite decent ram setup, great performance...
16GB its like heaven, but its pointless for a normal user computer...
32Gb its a way overkill...

That powersupply is a pile of shit. We constantly get units in with them if there is so much as a hint of a brownout. Read the johnny guru review on them it is not favorable.
