Meh, make the canal wider and then it can't be blocked by one ship.

Yeah that definitely inspired this news story, that's for sure. Clicketyclick!

Surprising how this is tech related... But oh well. Cool pic anyway.
Considering Suez Canal handles like a third of the maritime goods traffic, there's very little this isn't related to :(

Though there have been a few electric boats, fossil fuels can't be beaten yet.
Sure thing.
Now Humans, those will be beaten by our actions today.
But what do we matter anyway.

Stuff like this, especially when you see that map btarunr posted on page 1, makes you realize war is really not feasible at all anymore. Nobody wants to start shooting, your own foot is always somewhere in one of those containers.

Help is at hand, they've brought in more heavy machinery that will surely solve the problem in no time at all.

When today's technology is transported through this method, this will continue to happen.
Also, it is the single most cause of pollution in the world.
“It has been estimated that just one of these container ships, the length of around six football pitches, can produce the same amount of pollution as 50 million cars. The emissions from 15 of these mega-ships match those from all the cars in the world. And if the shipping industry were a country, it would be ranked between Germany and Japan as the sixth-largest contributor to CO2 emissions.”

I hope it gets stuck forever and they finally come up with different solutions and ways of transportation. This just isn't sustainable.
I think there is enough unemployment in the world we could probably go back to sails and oars.

They must have had a plan of reaction for something like this. If it can happen it will sooner or later. Not that it matters to me.

Combine those thoughts and put the unemployed to good use with a shovel widening the canal, or pulling on ropes attached to the ships to save on fuel.

Holy fucking shit. This has turned into a cosmic joke.

Pfft, not gonna happen anytime soon. Though there have been a few electric boats, fossil fuels can't be beaten yet.

This is a man made problem. If you want a ship of that size to go through, they should have considered accidents like this to happen. At this point, they will need quite a few tug boats to try and straighten the ship and tug it away if the engine is not working.

You realise they have more than one engine right?
They also have port and starboard thrust engines to assist with tight manoeuvres.

Consider all you want, you can't beat human error.
My money's not on the crew, but on the on-shore operating personnel.

Also, for anyone thinking that is a tight fit, check out ships crossing the Panama Channel.

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.

I've got some bad news for you: Container ships are one of the most efficient and "green" methods of transportation per ton. The problem is that they're shipping SO MUCH STUFF.

To reduce emissions, you need to stop the built-in-obsolescence and disposable product culture that continually demands replacement of short-lived, cheap manufactured products from China. Electronics are some of the worst offenders for this. You might use a car that's 30 years old, but would you replace your 3700X for a 486 DX2-66 from 1994? :)
