So I have this Steelseries USB controller that just doesn't like to play.

Firstly, some games just don't see it. Next Car Game really doesn't see it. Burnout Paradise is a bit weird, as it has to be manually set into the controls along the keyboard.

Secondly, the buttons are "joined" - let me explain. The four buttons on the right do the same exact things as the right joy stick. I push the stick up, it activates the number 1 button. There is no way to stop this.

Lastly, I can't find a program to let me tweak the settings such as joystick pressure; it's all or nothing when turning in Burnout. No "little left" or "hard left" because it's "straight" or "HARD F**kING LEFT."

Should I just get a new controller? And which one?

there are a few pieces of software that let you configure third party pads / emulate a 360 pad. you could buy pinnacle for example, but i would just buy a 360 controller.

Personaly i would rather us a PS 4 controller and DS4 tool because the analog sticks belong at the bottom of the controller, not that stupid mess that the xbox controller is.

Xbox controllers are basically plug-and-play, all they need is a quick driver download and they work with just about everything. To me they also feel a lot more solid than any Playstation controller I've used. (I've used PS3 Wireless, PS2 wireless and wired)

I'd rather not buy a new controller, giving this one a chance.

i personally prefer the ps3 controller as well, but:
1) i have a spare wireless 360 controller, and bought the dongle long ago
2) i hated having to resync my controller to my ps3. i lost use of a controller for months (ds3tool) before finally getting it to reset on a linux box!

if i had a spare ps3 controller, i would probably be using for comfort. that being said, my 360 controller is just fine.

@lighbulbie
with ds4tool your ps3 controller acts like a 360 controller, just like we're trying to do with your gamepad - only better.

as for x360ce, i'm sorry but i haven't used it for a long time and even then i don't remember having to mess with anything other then setting buttons. i'm sorry but maybe start another topic with x360ce in the title and ask for help specifically with that tool. good luck.

I FOUND THE ISSUE.

It wasn't stated in the manual that the MODE button changed the layouts. One is racing/strange alien layout, the other is normal FPS/Assassin's Creed playable. I hit the mode in the intro to AC4 and bam, it works.
