Convert video to GIF on techpowerup.org. Any demand?

Thinking about adding this feature. So far all converter websites I found offer horrible quality or require registration and have tons of limitations...

Making a beta means doing most of the work already. That's why I'm wondering, to not waste time on something that nobody's gonna use.

I think I would at least use it occasionally, but probably not regularly. Then again, I suppose that could be influenced by how easy to use it is. As you've already pointed out, existing online alternatives are a pain in the butt. Maybe if it was easier, more people would be converting videos to GIFs regularly.

I can't say I'd use it. I would use animated GIF hosting though (rarely).


The problem with converting video...of any kind...is the sheer ridiculous number of encodings out there. MP2/MP4 container files are an implementation disaster because of that. Sure, your video player can open MP4 but can it open XviD codec? Only one way to find out...

The other thing is that the GIF can reasonably only show like 5 seconds at a very small resolution. GIF performance is horribad because it is entirely CPU based (unless you're talking GIFV). Virtually all of the good GIFs out there were tweaked and optimized by software like GIF Movie Gear. It's not a process that can easily be automated.

Can't you make a cheap and fast experiment? Not a poll or survey. What people do often differs from what they say. If you can figure out a cheap on time and energy experiment to see if people would want convertion from video to gif. Without going to beta. May be a broken build or something ?

Doing that would almost guarantee people won't use it because they'd try it, realize it was broken and didn't work very well, and then never want to try it again.
Unless of course he takes the time to make it fully functional and polished, but at that point it's basically a finished product and like he said, he's already put the work in.

I feel like this is addressing the wrong problem. There are a lot better alternatives to GIFs so my question is, why are you being forced to use a GIF and would your time be better spent letting GIFs die and finding an alternative? People need to let GIF go the way of the dinosaur IMHO.

IMO it's better if you can experiment easy and fast to validate your idea on small scale than spending 6 months perfecting a great product only to find out nobody wants it.

Or over-architecting it. Great book by the way. I suspect such a project would be finicky at best, would require a ton of CPU compute and the ability to upload relatively large media files. It seems like a lot of work for minimal gain to me.

I think that only applies for a niche product where there is no alternative. There are plenty of alternatives for online video-to-GIF conversion. Granted, all of them suck, but what you're proposing is for W1z to rush something out the door before it is finished, which would result in just yet another crappy online video-to-GIF conversion tool. There is no compelling reason to use W1z's over anybody else's unless it works better.

edit: Don't get me wrong; everything should have a closed alpha/beta testing stage. That is entirely different though.
