Hello all,

I just put together a new system yesterday.

I purchased a cooler master 101a and it doesn't seem to cover the entire surface of my AMD FX-4130 chip.

Am I doing something wrong? this isn't normal, no?

I put the stock cooler back on the chip for now until further notice.

If you followed the instructions Im sure its fine. Take a picture if you want us to look. We like pictures. Maybe just the edge of the CPU cap showing. But would have to see it. The chip is in the center of the CPU. They just make it look big so you don't loose it :)

Can you get a picture for us? If it covers most of the chip, you're probably OK, but if it's only covering a little bit of the CPU then you've probably installed it wrong..

That cooler is garbage anyways. The heatpipes are so spread apart, it makes no sense.

I have a Hyper 101a and it covers almost the entire CPU (FX 4100). There is a small amount not covered, but that is just a few mm of the outside edge. My temps are good, so it doesn't appear to be doing any harm.

Okay cool. I wasn't sure?

What kind of temps are we talking?

Guys should I stick with factory cooler for now?

I want to OC a bit, but I also don't want to cause any damage.

It won't cause any damage... Just be sure the block is lined up with the CPU as good as possible when you tighten it down. It's not going to allow for much overclocking though, it's only a little bit better than a stock cooler.

Okay.

I just wanted to get an idea where your temps were with that cooler and chip.

Thanks much :)

After dinner I will put this cooler back in the system and see what happens.

Also, I noticed jester asked what program?

That makes me ask, What is a good program to check my temp ranges?

i've no problem with the 101i (intel version) keeps my i5 @ 40 C idle and no more than 60 C crunching or gaming. I personally think they are decent, affordable lil coolers... better than stock HSF

Okay I ran 3dmark 11 basic version and my highest temp in CPUID was 68c on the CPU.

I am not real familiar with AMD chips and temps.

Is that too high for a FX-4130?

Oh that is with the Cooler Master 101a back on the system.

Don't let package temp go over 62C, that is the important number.

Also not covering the whole heat spreader is fine, the die underneath is actually quite small. Even the stock intel coolers only cover about 50% of the heat spreader. It's better to apply all force to the centre of the heat spreader to enable better thermal transfer. Some heat sinks are designed with a convex base on purpose to aid in this, forcing all pressure to the centre.

Thank you for all of that info.

I just ordered the Cooler Master Hyper 212.

From the sounds of it. It seems like a decent cooler.

The 212 Evo is excellent value, the XtraFlo fan it comes with is balanced perfectly to the performance of the heat sink. The mounting system is a bit of a pain (while most mounting systems just require you to screw into a back plate, CM makes you thread a nut through the back plate adding another step and possibly another hand required.
I've been playing with a 212 Evo myself the last couple of days on my i7 950, heat pipes are getting saturated at 3.8Hz 1.28v, tried remounting multiple times, also a 3000RPM fan, but seems to be the limit for what it can handle.

Ive tried many coolers. I always go back.

Lazermonkey, ask before you buy. There are some hardware choices that are no brainers. We can save you a lot of time and money.

My C12P outperforms the 212 by about 2C at a lower noise level, pretty good, I've had this heat sink for ~5 years and it's still going strong across all the platform changes. Benefit of also cooling the surrounding motherboard area which is just as important as cooling the CPU itself.
