Also, how much of an effect does changing the TIM on the stock cooler have? I remember seeing it had a pretty positive effect on the 4850, but what about the 70?

I just replaced the stock TIM on my 4870 with AS5 while searching for "the" cooler for this hot-ass card. I took a comparison of temps at idle with the stock cooler at 38%.

Stock TIM:
GPU1 - 44c
GPU2 - 54c
GPU3- 43c

AS5:
GPU1: 41c
GPU2: 50c
GPU3: 40c

Not much difference if you ask me. We need a better aftermarket cooler for these things than what's currently out as far as I can tell.

Can you please take comparisons at load (if you have any from the stock TIM)??

Yea, I was thinking the accelero S1 rev2 but its just so freakin huge!! Either that or the Twin Turbo, unless something new comes out soon.

I don't have load temps for the stock cooler + stock TIM. But the stock cooler with AS5 gets the following for me:

GPU1: 59c
GPU2: 67.5c
GPU3: 61c

VDDC1: 71c
VDDC2: 74c
VDDC3: 73c

*Fan is at 40% constant via profile hack.
**My card is at 800/1100 as another point of reference here.
***Temps achieved after ~20min RTHDRIBL.

Also, I have tried both the Thermaltake DuOrb and the Zalman VF900 on my card with a array of aluminum heatsinks on the VRMs. Both had worse GPU temps than the stock cooler (75c load) and overheated even with an 80mm fan pointed directly at the VRMs (VRM temp hit 90c after ~20min of Assassin's Creed).
