Hi my daughter bought a laptop from her friend it has an ordinary 500mb sata drive in it but she asked if I could put an ssd in it for her the only thing is the sata drive has a recovery partition on it so you can put it back to factory settings how would I transfer all of what is on the sata drive to the ssd.

Hi Frick without sounding a numpty if I take out the drive with the partition on it and put in the new ssd how can I install the partition, yes the windows is valid.

Hi dorsetknob I don't think it is worth buying Acronis just to use it once any good easy to use free ones out there.

Well depending what drive you have in the system already and the new device some offer a program to do just what you need. As were talking about a laptop you need to find a way to connect the drive to the system so the transfer can happen.

So if one of them is a WD drive check their site as they offer a modified version of Arconis, and if ones a Seagate surly they have some software out their too.

Arconis, doesn't require the drives you wanna clone to be in the target machine it just requires that both drives be in a computer you can pull the drives and install them in a desktop and then clone the 500GB to to the SSD and then simply install the ssd in the laptop and away you go
if you can't get arconis http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
*note while the target SSD can be smaller then the source drive you need to make sure that the total used space on the source drive does not exceed the capacity of the SSD

Macrium Reflect FTW. You can use it to do a direct clone, and it will automatically adjust the size of the big partition to fit the SSD if needed (with Acronis you have to do that manually after the clone if the target is larger). It can also clone a source drive in-place while the OS is booted (doesn't require the source drive to be slaved to a separate machine), and it can clone to/from a USB -> SATA enclosure if needed.

Now if you want to do a clean install, you can also use Reflect after you have everything installed and updated and all the settings the way you want them (before you start loading personal data like pics/docs) - to create your own restore image that requires a lot less configuration/update time after deployment and wont have all the HP/Dell crapware preloaded. It can even put a boot-time menu with a restore option so it can restore right from the SSD just like the factory restore partition. This is what I do with all machines that I clean install - if you want I'll post the procedure.
