Core 2 vs i3

My kids are still dealing with an old 478 socket pentium. They are old enough now to be playing games that require a real computor. A few of the games require at least a Core 2 CPU. How does the i3 compare? Will it fit the bill as being "at least" or is it more like a celeron on a newer socket?

i3 is about as fast as a q6600@3Ghz in most computing tasks. Pretty fast gaming chip if you OC it to 4Ghz, which can be easily attainable on stock cooling.

i3's are good, they provide a good platform for upgrading to the later i5's and then after that i7's. You might want to consider AMD though, because they generally provide better for money when it comes to budget parts.

i3 isn't going to perform much better than the core 2's from what i've read (might still be wrong here) I personally would go i5 at least.

If you're going to build an entirely new system, I'd go with an I3 because it's just newer technology and more future proof. I3 performs a little bit better at same mhz, but probably you can buy more mhz for the same price of core2duo right now.

The key in gaming is the videocard though, so if you need help with that give a shout. (and budget)

PS I3 is definitely not celeron, but the next generation of dual core's.
