I haven't actually ever tried before. It's always been clocked at 1603MHz but would be nice if I could go higher like 1800MHz or higher.

Worth a shot. We had a set of XMS 3 on our i7 930 and it didn't overclock to the rated 2000. However we were able to get 1800. Combination of higher core clock like around 3800 and some ram overclock would work well. The i7 930 we have got to 4.2 with no ram overclock, but 4.0 with ram overclock (samsung green 3x4gb) 1333 to 2000 gave a very good result, faster on benchmarks then the 4.2 actually and more stable. IIRC.

I did very extensive i7 920 bench-marking back in the day and i found out that 3.5 GHz was the lowest speed at which the system was not bottle-necked. Some tests were 30 % faster with 3.5 GHz vs 2.66 GHz.

Above 3.5 GHz there was like 1% gain per 100 MHz even up to 4.3 GHz, but that was then, in 2012 with GTX670.. If now paired with GTX1070 or GTX980 Ti i am sure even 4 GHz would not be enough to get rid of bottleneck.
