Hey guys, im doing a competition on facebook at the mo and if I win i'll get an EVGA X58 Classified X3 sli motherboard and 3 x 2gb DDR3 Corsair Dominator GT's! So really hoping I get this one in the bag.

So if I am successful I will sell my current motherboard/cpu/ram and get an i7 950 since they are so awesomely cheap right now

A few things I'd like your opinions/recommendations on, please bear with me as I have never owned anything intel :

Firstly, I'll be keeping my current two 5850's - how do you think my 750W Silverstone strider PSU will handle a heavily overclocked i7 + 5850 xfire system as versus my PII system right now? (i'll be aiming for 4Ghz+ with HT enabled)

I may look into buying another 5850 on the cheap from a friend and go trifire, so i'll definitely have to upgrade the psu if i go down that track yes?

Secondly, now im funny like this but I want my system to look great, so the red/black theme of the evga board, the dom gts and 5850's will look awesome, all matching well... so cooling that i7...Im thinking of a self contained cooler like H50/70 as they are small, dont take up a huge amount of room so you can still see all that evga sexiness - would the h50/70 suffice for a 4ghz OC on the i7? as long as its under 80C running linpack i'd be happy i think.

Trifire scales so bad, another 5850 is a waste of money... you can buy your friend's and sell your least favorite 5850...

Your 750W will do great, no worries at all. My HX850 was Overkill by ALOT for 5850 CF and i7 @ 4GHZ HT

Does your S1284 work on lga 1366? maybe with a bracket? I find the H50/70 would hide more of the mobo than anything, or if it doesn't, it won't look any cooler than air mostly... You want cool? A watercooling setup with nice lights and/or colored water, ie: Red in your case

excellent, thats great news on the PSU front, and yes the s1284 will work on lga1366 if i get the bracket. They're just so huge haha.

The great thing about having a haf 932 case is the fact I could mount the H50/70 in a few places to keep it out of the way, like up the top instead of the rear exhaust. I agree a full loop would be perfect, but I don't think i'll have quite enough funding for that unfortunately

idk if johnnyfive is still selling, but for 170$ shipped, you get a full CPU WC loop minus the tubing, which is probably around what you would have payed for your friend's 5850 and definitively less than your friend's 5850+H50 or H70

Try to shop around for parts, see what it gives... perhaps the best would try to look at sites from your local area to see how much it would cost you.

Else, just stick cool fans, perhaps LED fans to make it look better if you want

yeah, as a comparison to get a H50 in NZ it's like $169.00, the H70 is $209.00 - where as getting a full loop dual 120 rad,pump, 1366 cpu block and res is well over $400.00 not including coolant and tubing.

Remeber that the H50/70 is equal to the top end air coolers, and not much better than your current HSF

even with my PII at 3.6Ghz this thing still almost hits 60C which is considered hot for these chips - so I dunno what to do really

I'm doing an i7 920 D0 with 2 fans on a hyper 212+ at 4ghz at around 70~75C

Fwiw I can run about 1.225v under load (LinX) in my HAF 932 and my 920 stays under 80C in 24C ambient with my Noctua NH-D14 passive. I've also gamed for several hours with a 4870x2 in the same case and cpu temps never got over 60C. 4Ghz needs about 1.2625 in bios with LLC enabled and the middle 140mm fan with the ULNA (~900 rpms) and no problems with gaming temps in the same case.

When I ran it passive I was surprise to find my 200mm HAF fans loud and attached two of them to the board to slow them to 500 rpms. After I replaced the 4870x2 with the 5870 I was able to game for 5+ hours in a system that is virtually silent. The 5870 fan never got over 30% during gaming. This wasn't a single time either. I did it several days in and out and never once got a bsod.

Also be aware that you could get a hot chip. What I mean by hot chip is what I have. A 920 D0 that will not stay below 90c at 4.2 Ghz. The Venom, H50, H70 all fail to cool my chip. Push pull? Forget it. Draw cold air from outside of the case? Pffff. Re-engineer your case airflow a dozen times? How about you re-engineer your face. My 920 laughs at my feeble attempts to cool it. It does however reward me with stability regardless.

is there any cpu coolers that use the vapor chamber approach? i'd imagine that'd be more effective on a cpu just like with gpus right? - or, some kind of self contained LN2 cooler! now thats what we need haha.

out of those coolers which do you prefer on your hotter-than-the-surface-of-the-sun 920?

The venom and the H70 in push pull perform about the same for me. I'd pick the H70 over the venom for the same reason I picked the venom over a D-14... finger/ram room.

Awesome, i'd probably take the h70 myself too for that exact reason - also, how does a h50 perform in push/pull vs H70 in push/pull? i understand the h70 has the thicker rad but how much does it help? for me the price for a H50 is $159 where as H70 is $209 - would it be worth the extra forthe H70 if I went down that road?

Well I never ran the H50 in push pull, and with my chip it couldn't really keep up at all. My experience won't be the norm though. oh man im so annoyed atm lol, I just received notice from the store thats doing this competition that the EVGA board I had selected for the competition is no longer available, so I have to choose another board now - I really liked that one because it was red/black lol (i know i know looks aren't everything) but yeah - gutted!

Why not get the FTW3 version? Outside of that the Rampage III Formula is the other option I would pick.

The Rampage is a better board of the Premium. No comparison, lot more control.

i'll get my moneys worth if i go for ftw3 + 6gb ram, that comes to $797.00 - thats if I win by the way lol.

the only way I can get the Rampage is if I get the i7 950 + 6gb of faster (CL7 rather than CL8) memory from the comp - which comes to $778.00 - then sell what i have atm to get the rampage...decisions decisions!
