Got myself a 3440x1440 freesync 2 IPS monitor and it is beautiful along with a Radeon 5700. I don't normally play a ton of games. Cities Skylines looks amazing and is buttery smooth on max settings. Rocket league also plays well. However Division 2 is acting strangely. At 3440x1400 in DX 12 on all low settings the FPS shows between 45-70. However when moving the game camera around it stutters. The FPS doesn't drop when it stutters and the monitor shows the variable refresh rate is adjusting appropriately. I am running an i5 7500 Kaby Lake at 3.4 GHz with 16 gigs of ram and an NVMe drive. So is the CPU the bottleneck or is there something else going on?

Benchmark Scores theres nothing to brag abt potato, but it can run decent 30fps fullhd with good setting:)
dunno for sure as rx5700, but i think freesync is bad, i testing many times include testing gsync rtx on my friend pc, no better than ingame vsync, i personnaly use vsync, its more stable for eliminate any shutter

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
4c/4t in Div 2.. it could be. It's a GPU heavy res, but that game uses what it can get CPU wise IIRC...

EDIT: YOu can see a 2c/4t part neuters things at 2560x1440, but not at 4K UHD. You're somewhere between that (closer to 2560x1440) and with 4c/4t though... I'd bet that CPU use is high and if it isn't the problem, its part of it.

Make sure you have Vsync and any other stuff in game switched off. Try switching the amd enhanced sync in the driver under the game tab. Also switch on the adaptive sync in the game.
I had similar problems with other games. Sometimes you have to tweak it a bit.

Launch a game with MSI afterburner and see what CPU utilization you have. EarthDog might be right.

Here. This is interesting. 4k 5700 division 2 basically never drops below 70 FPS. I'm not sure what processor the author is using though.

Are you sure you linked the right video? It covers 1440p and some other game.

Ignore CPU utilization for now unless it's maxed on all threads. If the GPU isn't maxed or near maxed, you most likely have a bottleneck on the CPU side. Depending on how well optimized a game is for multiple cores, you may hit a bottleneck without fully loading all of the threads on your CPU.

Turning on enhanced sync in the radeon control panel fixed the problem with the random stutter. The game plays much smoother now 60-75 FPS on low and at 50% scaling. However I turned it up to 75% scaling and set textures to medium and it crashed. FPS was still in mid 60s. CPU utilization was at 100% though. I am going to get Riva Tuner installed and take a closer look.

That should tell you everything you need to know and should be grateful that it's that clear cut. ;)

I am certain its CPU bottelneck.
Recently I was playing Shadow Warrior 2 and whenever the CPU utilisation hit 98 to 100 percent framerete drops from 65-70 to 10-15fps and sometimes even 1fps. Yours case looks kinda similar. And I was running on a i5 4590 with a RX 560 4G at 768p.

So you aren't running at the native resolution in the first place but something a lot lower.

That CPU may be begging for mercy at 100%.

Yea, the CPU is pretty much pegged at 100% while moving around and battling. I was already thinking of upgrading this proc to the i7 varient for another project. The nice thing to know is that the CPU upgrade will crease FPS so I can get some of these graphic settings up.

I just switched from a 4770k and Vega 56. I was pushing similar frames on mostly medium some highs but I did not have any stuttering to speak of.

Edit: As a side note, my cpu usage was hovering around 50%.

Edit 2:. Pixel wise, you are almost dead in the middle. Just a percent or three off. Performance wise, it usually shades closer to 4k than to 2560x1440.

How are you measuring that?
Its not even close in the middle. Its less than 1/3 actually...
Going from 2560x1440 to 3840x2160 you over doubling the pixels = 125%
Going from 2560x1440 to 3440x1440 you have increased it by 34%
So from 0 to 125 the 34 is about 27.5%

1920x1080 = 2,073,600 _(16:9 100%)--------------------------------------(0%)
1920x1200 = 2,304,000 (16:10 111%) (100%)
2560x1440 = 3,686,400 (16:9 178%)-------------(100%)----(0%)
3840x1080 = 4,147,200 _(32:9 200%)
3840x1200 = 4,608,000 (32:10 222%) (200%)
3440x1440 = 4,953,600 (32:9 239%)-------------(134%)---(27.5%)-----(60%)
3840x2160 = 8,294,400 (16:9 400%)-------------(225%)---(100%)-----(100%)
4096x2160 = 8,847,360 _(17:9 427%)

All these numbers refering to actual pixel count and do not reflect the true performance decrease. For example going from 1920x1080 to 3840x2160 is a x4 increase in pixels. So you think you will drop a 75% in frame rate (like from 100 to 25).
Its not the case...
This depends on the game, the settings of the game and the system it self CPU/GPU/RAM.
A capable system will see like a 60~65% FPS drop... while an unsufficient one will see maybe 80% drop if not more. Look through reviews and do the math.

Overclocking would help a bit, but the i5 7500 is a locked CPU and limited to its max boost (maybe a smidge of bclk) for clock speed. That game also needs more than 4c/4t for smooth game play anyway.

Memory might also be a factor, running JEDEC 2400 will probably cause some stalling of the CPU cores.

Man, this cpu/ram is only 2 years old. Seems nuts that a game that was just starting to be developed 2 years ago would be so demanding. I assume it isn't the most efficient code.

Yeah but it is mostly just a clock bump from the i5 6500 that launched in 2015 4 years ago.... quad cores in the latest game engines struggle pretty bad even vs a R5 1600.

Okay well not to shift directions of the topic but the mainboard I have is AsRock MicroATX Z170M Extreme4. The fastest CPU I can get is the i7-7700K @ 4.2 GHz. Will that make a difference at $350 or should I just go get a new mainboard,chip,ram ? Id rather not spend a lot if I can avoid it.

Much better off with a 3600 and a b450 tomohawk max and just keeping your ram it will still be faster and more future proof in the majority of games... Also I would use ryzen dram calculator with your ram you may be able to squeeze more out of it. Worst case for another 70 ish you can get a really decent 3200 or 3600 kit.

Just my opinion though.

ignore the warning the max motherboards do not require a bios update.

I would put the value of a 7700k at around $140, if you can't get it for less than that I'd say it's not worth it... The prices on the second hand market for intel parts are quite bloated for those so I don't think it will arise as a particularly good option.

DDR4-2400 is pretty close to bottom of the stack when it comes to DDR4 speeds, doesn't really matter whether it's new or not... You could still get DDR3-1066 when DDR4 started coming into play. As for CPUs, the market has moved very quicky in the last 2 years and I don't think it will slow very much.

Try fine tuning the settings, some features can be turned down with minimal impact on overall quality. Look more at settings that impact the cpu. Also check for things running in the background

Edit, nvm about settings, just reread and saw you're on low already

Any cooling on the nvme drive?

How are you measuring that?
Its not even close in the middle. Its less than 1/3 actually...
Going from 2560x1440 to 3840x2160 you over doubling the pixels = 125%
Going from 2560x1440 to 3440x1440 you have increased it by 34%
So from 0 to 125 the 34 is about 27.5%

1920x1080 = 2,073,600 _(16:9 100%)--------------------------------------(0%)
1920x1200 = 2,304,000 (16:10 111%) (100%)
2560x1440 = 3,686,400 (16:9 178%)-------------(100%)----(0%)
3840x1080 = 4,147,200 _(32:9 200%)
3840x1200 = 4,608,000 (32:10 222%) (200%)
3440x1440 = 4,953,600 (32:9 239%)-------------(134%)---(27.5%)-----(60%)
3840x2160 = 8,294,400 (16:9 400%)-------------(225%)---(100%)-----(100%)
4096x2160 = 8,847,360 _(17:9 427%)

Meh. I use my experience running the same resolution. I did all the maths many moons ago but apparently my memory isn't as good as it once was.

No idea if you want a Ryzen or not but you can get a 3600 and b450 for less than that. Keep the ram and overclock if you can and you'll still better off.

I agree for the value of the i7 7700k today. 150$ at max.... Even Intel now advertise it as i3... see 10th series.
Competition is working these days!

The 7700k would be better. I had my 4790k at 4.6 and that was still getting eaten up in Div2.

Are you sure you linked the right video? It covers 1440p and some other game.
Yeah it is not 4k. I must have put the wrong video. But still you get a glimpse of the performance in 1440p. Still it does tell something about the performance of 5700.
