Hello everyone!

So, i have a Z170 Asus VIII Ranger with a i7 6700k cooled by Dark Rock 3, 16GB RAM 3200mhz and a RTX 2080 MSI Gaming Z paired with Dell S2716DG monitor, and the game i love (Battlefield series) i'm feeling stuttering a lot in BFV and that is ruining my experience with the game, my CPU is always at 100%, 99% of the time and i've decided to upgrade my CPU.

Before some sugestions i have some things to say:

- I don't want an AMD CPU, my PC is 99,9% for gaming so Intel it is (yeah i know they are expensive asf right now).
- I always had K CPU's because of the extra turbo boost, not because i OC it, i don't know how to OC i never did it and i don't want to.
- My PC is totally built for silence because i'm sensible to noise specially to fans and coil whines... And why do i say this? Because i need a CPU that is not going to make my Dark Rock 3 explode his fan with noise and all the system lol.
- I like to have a good motherboard even if the CPU is a NON-K.

I've made my research, the options i'm interested in are: i7 8700, 8700k, 8086k and 9700k. For what i've saw, 9700k runs very hot, 8700 seems the best option for me since 9700 doesn't exist or any of the other two will do good without getting very hot and starting to explode my cooler? lol. I can wait a bit more (not much because i'm getting very frustrated playing the game like that lol) if there are any news from CPU coming up too.

Thanks in advance :D

FTR, most non-K processors have turbo modes too. For example, look at the i7 8700 and note it has a base frequency of 3.2GHz and a Turbo Boost frequency of 4.6GHz. I note this CPU has a 65W TDP while the 8700K is 95W. That suggests when tasked, the K model will need more cooling which may result in louder fan noise.

I hate fan noise too. I mean, I really hate it. But note it is also the case's responsibility to suppress noise. So if not happy with your current case's noise suppression, you might consider a different case. I am very happy with Fractal Design cases. Most come with sound deadening lining that works very well.

That said, is this your motherboard? If so, I don't see your CPU choices listed on the QVL. To ensure compatibility, you must use a listed CPU!

Beyond that, what I don't see above is your budget. And make sure any upgrade can be supported by your current PSU.

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
9700K and a new mobo. Running hot isn't really an issue - that cooler will be fine.

There is a sizeable chunk of games that don't love hyperthreading that suffer minor hitching/framedrops if you leave it on (i.e. far cry 5). So getting the 9700k would be the best of both worlds IMO.

About the case and PSU, i have a Fractal Define S with Bequiet fans on all the case 1x Silent Wings 2 120MM PWM (back) + 2x Pure Wings 2 140MM (front) and a EVGA Supernova G2 850W so yes everything is already silent that's why i don't want anything to make noise and ruin this silent beast lol.

I know that motherboard is not on support list, i'm going to swap both mobo and CPU of course!

You think 8700 is a good bet here or going for 9700k is the best option and i will not have problems with heat/noise?

It would be a waste of money to upgrade your system. (your 6700K is virtually identical to the 7700K) Learn to OC a bit, maybe ask over in the OC forum for some beginner's advice. It really is hard to hurt a CPU these days.

do you have performance mode set to high in windows ? that will lock your cpu to high full time [ may not allow it to down clock to its idle clocking ] if so set it to balanced and see if it runs / downclocks to normal .

https://www.howtogeek.com/240840/sh...er-or-high-performance-power-plan-on-windows/

I don't use that malware service called win-10 so don't know if that's a option still in it or not

well I guess it is
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2843-change-power-plan-settings-windows-10-a.html

just to add what in your task manager shows to be using all that cpu ? if not due to that power setting must be a service or program running wild or malware causing this

all assuming your build is all under supported hardwar use or a defective part in some way , but that cpu useage should show in your task manager [ show all tasks ]

9700K is better, soldered HS, all real cores, no threads and no stutter associated with. But with 10nm and DDR5 just around the corner, 9700K will be obsoleted pretty quick, of course you can still use it the next 6 years, it will hold the front well.

Then you need to wait until you choose your new motherboard, then check its CPU QVL and pick a CPU that board supports. Don't forget, a new motherboard may require new RAM (there is also a RAM QVL - you don't have to buy listed RAM but you should buy RAM with the same specs as listed RAM to ensure compatibility). And lastly, a new motherboard typically requires a new Windows license since OEM licenses are not legally transferable.

I too would go for the 9700K, if only for that 4.9Ghz turbo boost if not overclocking, what Bill says about the 8700 makes a lot of sense but if you have the money then the additional boost will do you well.

I live in Europe, so the prices are not good for either models lol.

So, i've decided the following motherboards:

- Asus ROG Strix Z370-F Gaming - 175€

- Asus ROG STRIX Z390-F GAMING - 207€

And now CPU:

- Intel i7 8700k: 415€
- Intel i7 8086k: 446€
- Intel i7 9700k: 456€

What would be the best price/perfomance relation here? I would buy any of those that you suggest me is *the best* for the buck here. If it's worth 8700k to 9700k or not, etc...

Would you please fill in the rest of your specs?

Updated my profile with full specs :)

I would probably go for the 9700 and the cheapest of those boards as you are not going to overclock but you still get the max 4.9 gig boost.

Since 9700 is still not available, is there any prediction for it?

It is available in the UK and a fair bit cheaper than the price you listed earlier...………...

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/inte...e-socket-lga1151-processor-oem-cp-65m-in.html

That site also takes international orders.

Wait, you said "9700" i tought you were talking about NON-K version of the 9700, that's why i questioned if it was available lol.

About the link you provided, it's not cheaper because Pounds to Euros it's the same ammount, 398£ = 450€.

Sorry, yes I meant K version, there is no non K version currently of the 9700, one UK pound is more than the euro, current exchange rate shows a British pound buys 1.127 euro making it slightly less expensive.

Edit: Sorry, for some reason I had it in my head that it was £385 so yes your right, slightly more expensive but at least it's available!

So I finally made this buy, I went for:

Z390 Asus Strix F Gaming 198€ (COD BO4 for free) and i7 9700k for 416€.

Thanks everyone for the help and I hope to notice a lot the performance gains in gaming compared to my 6700k :p

So I finally made this buy, I went for:

Z390 Asus Strix F Gaming 198€ (COD BO4 for free) and i7 9700k for 416€.

Thanks everyone for the help and I hope to notice a lot the performance gains in gaming compared to my 6700k :p

personally i dont think you will see much of a performance gain if any.. also a 6700K should not be causing gaming problems..

it would have made a lot more sense to simply clock your 6700k to 4.6 on all cores and buy a good (quiet) cooler..

just my oppinion for what its worth.. :)

At least you are admitting that you are intel fanboy so buy most expensive one like 9900K i am sure it won't be bottlenecked for a long time.

My pc is 99.9% for gaming and I love my 2700X. Just saying.

But I don't play at 720p :3

In all seriousness 9700k is a solid CPU but Ryzen 3000 is literally around the corner... And the gaming crown might even shift or be shared. Maybe even Intel price cuts. Oh wait, who am I kidding. They won't cut prices, so just buy the 9700K since you won't even consider Ryzen. Enjoy the 12% higher average FPS though. :3

Sorry, but I really fell that upgrading from a 6700k is just really stupid. Delid it, put it to 5GHz and be done with it. At the moment there are just a couple of games emerging that even profit from more than four cores, Reality is, that frequency is still king, so just get it to 5 GHz...
Save the 500 bucks you would spend on a new mainboard plus cpu and get one when intel responds to Zen2, i think thats when it will get interesting again.

8700 vs 8700K, you are talking about 100-200 MHz difference at the most at the turbo level. 8700K vs 8086K, zero difference except base clock and single core turbo clock. 9700K is best for gaming as it has 8 cores (and no HT), and in some cases outperforms the 9900K. Incidentally if not overclocking, the OP can also get a 9900K and disable HT, and he would have the fastest cpu in the world for gaming (without overclocking). The 8086K is not a chip I would recommend for gaming as the cost per performance is higher than the 9700K by a long shot (plus u get more cores) as the 9th gen unlocked CPUs are using a refined coffee lake die (8c die), whereas the 8th gen and locked 9th gen are using Kaby and Coffee Lake dies, which results in lower maximum overclocks, which in the flip side, results in less efficiency. Sorry for the long explanation :)
