Hello all,
I bought a cheap PC off Ebay for my son to play some old games. It has a Pentium 4 630 HT processor, I Gb memory and an old AGP video card. The question I have is can I put a Core 2 Quad in this socket 775 board. I have done some research and some say yes and some say no. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Looking at the CPU support page of the mentioned board I can only see P4 processors, none of their Core 2 siblings so I'd say you wont be able to drop a Core 2 quad in it.

Thanks all. I Appreciate your help. I have an old HD 4670 AGP card, do you think this will play old games like COD, COD2, Max Payne 1 & 2?

Note: even if the BIOS were to support the Core family, the FSB limits the performance gains enormously (since the multiplier is locked and made with faster FSBs in mind).

Yes that card should do fine.

Thanks again. One last question. Do you think it is worth getting a Pentium 4 HT 670 (3.8ghz) over the 630 (3.00ghz) it has in it now? If so is stock cooler ok as I would not overclock it. I can get the 670 on Ebay for $24 and have just order some ram taking it up to 3Gb.

You'll really need a slight memory upgrade to play anything.

You should get another 1gb at least,

You might consider fitting a EVO 212 cooler OR SIMILAR with 2 fans in push /pull config as your in Aus and heat might be an issue
p4 630 HT = 83W p4 670HT= 115W
improved cooling over stock cooling is ALWAYS A WORTHWHILE INVESTMENT

Pro-tip: do not but too much money in that PC, else you are ending up paying as much for it as for some more recent (second hand) machine. So see first how well it goes now before throwing more coin into this project.

Good tip.I have tested out games like COD, COD2, MOHAA, Max Payne 1 & 2, Farcry etc on the P4 630 3.0 GHZ/HD 4670 AGP/1Gb ram combo
and they all seem to run well on my 1080p monitor. I have purchased another 2 GB memory on Ebay for $10 so that should help a lot. I picked up a cheap 1280x1024 LCD for $25 as a most old games look better on 4:3 format. Do you think it worthwhile getting a P4 670 3.8 Ghz as I can get one on Ebay for little $ or just run with what I have? I only have a generic 400 watt PSU in the box, but as you rightly said do not put too much $ into the project. Thanks.

I would certainly leave it at that if I were you. Your son should be set with that.

If it was for you then yes by all means wack a cheap P4 670 HT ( and better cooler of course)

for your son its Adequate ( Opportunity of chore's Bribeability for a later upgrade on the cheap :))
