Cracking Noise while connecting PCI

I recently got a new gpu. When I’ve connected. Only with one pci 8x every thing would start only the message would show up “Please power down the pc and connect the second pci cable” and I so I found 2x4 pci what was coming from the inside of the power supply and I connected it but the pc wanted start so I pulled out the 2x4 and pc turned on. When I tried the second time I thought the pc was off and when I putted it In there was a electrical cracking sound and after that the pc would turn on the the gpu want even light up. Can someone tell me what happens to my gpu?

You fried the card, take to a shop for verification. Possible the PSU is too weak too.

Hate to say it but I agree with the above - You fried it since the system was still powered up when you made the connection.

2x4 pin ? You put the 2x4 pin EPS CPU cable in 8-pin PEG on GPU.

btw will not= won't not want, remember that to avoid confusion.

Please attatch some pics of your gpu and psu connectors, though it might be too late and the card is already fried. Maybe not the card, but the connectors are damaged. This might not be covered by warranty too.

Does it pass the smell test ? Do you smell anything funny from the connectors on the card or the 4 pins ?

You could but there is no guarantee it can be fixed.
You'd be better off going for an RMA of the card and hope it's approved. As to whether it's fixable or not depends on how it died, some can be fixed, some not.
BTW, the above statement is relevant, you did connect the correct hook up... Right?
The PCI-E connector is normally red in color, if you hooked up a black or blue one then it's probrably toasted beyond repair.

Anyway, you can use this as a lesson in working on PC's - ALWAYS make sure the system is powered down before attempting any work even if you have to manually switch off the PSU/unplug it from the wall or this is what you'll get and double-check connections to be sure they are correct - If in doubt, just don't do it because if it's wrong all doubts will be resolved..... Badly.
Ask someone that would know first.

I'm sorry this has turned into an expensive lesson for you (And Dad) but that's how it goes sometimes.

I am trying to figure out how could it be possible you didn't realize that the PC was on there are fans spinning, lights flashing and some other stuff running, or you were completely distracted or this is you first build?

Tell your dad you broke the card, request rma and tell thdm the card stopped working.

Read some books on how to build computers.

About the best summary of this situation:

You fried the card

You put the 2x4 pin EPS CPU cable in 8-pin PEG on GPU

You should have put in a 6+2 pin PEG/PCI/GPU power cable into the card. What you put it was the spare 4+4 CPU cable which is not the correct... anything at all.
You need to check if your PSU even has a 6+2 cable.

You'd be better off going for an RMA of the card and hope it's approved

Just play the ignorant card.

Yup, say you put the PEG cable explicitly ! Don't say it was your mistake. Tell them the PC works when you swap cards, you've got two of their most expensivest cards and they work fine too.

That's why don't do these things without knowing what you're doing.

2x4pin truly sounds like EPS, it has 12V and GND wires inverted vs. PCI-E. And that can screw things up, even more possibly if it's some low-tier crappy PSU.

We've all screwed up at some point so don't be so hard on him guys - I'm sure Dad isn't too happy about it either by now.

I'm chalking this up to a valueable lesson well earned that's not worth forgetting.

Read up on the subject, ask questions.... Whatever it takes to not only avoid this happening again but in whatever else you may have questions about in the future. You're better off asking while looking "Dumb" in the eyes of a few vs not asking and really looking dumb when the magic smoke is released - Not to mention the extra expense involved.

Kind of reminds me of a guy that ordered more memory from the the company I worked at. He got it and installed it. He then called in and I got to talk to him.

I saw the other slot next to it for the stick you guys shipped me. I installed the memory and my computer shut off. It won't turn back on now.
Me: I just want to make sure I have this correct. You removed the side panel on the computer and you installed the new memory and when you did that your computer turned off? Is that correct?
Guy: Yes, that is correct.
Me: So the computer was powered on and you installed the memory?
Guy: Yes. Now it won't turn on again. I've tried unplugging it from the wall and even tried another wall socket, but it won't power on.
I muted the phone again and told the other techs on the help desk that were working at the time and we all just laughed and laughed for a few minutes....

Poor guy didn't know he had to power his system off. Poor me, I had to be on the phone with him for 2 hours getting his business back up and running.

Some people just have to learn the hard way.
