Cray Inc. and Intel Corporation announced today they signed a multi-year agreement to advance high-performance computing (HPC) on Intel microprocessors while delivering broad new Intel and Cray technologies in future Cray server systems. The collaboration of these two industry leaders will result in HPC systems that will help solve some of the world's most complex scientific, engineering and humanitarian challenges.

Ooh, Cray make Supercomputers, and Intel makes superchips; can we expect some kind of acceleration of Intel's CPU plan? Maybe Cray can give them some tips... :D
Either way, this is another kick in the head to AMD.

this is gonna be a boon for supercomputing, but a nut-kick for high profile AMD investment

News - Cray to switch from AMD to Intel (Nehalem)
Posted by VirtualRain at 2:21 PM

It seems the promise of Intel's QuickPath architecture has the attention of Cray as EETimes is reporting that Cray is negotiating a switch from AMD to Intel based on the strengths of Nehalem's QuickPath multiprocessor interconnect. This is yet another blow to AMD and a strong endorsement that we can expect great things from the Nehalem architecture in the HPC arena.

Here's a quote from the EETimes story...

Two years ago, Cray chose AMD for the so-called Cascade system it proposed as part of its DARPA bid. Winning the project was seen by some observers as crucial to the survival of the supercomputer maker which was facing financial troubles.

Cray is seeking approval from DARPA for its plans to shift the Cascade design to Intel processors using Intel's recently announced QuickPath Interconnect technology that provides links at up to 6.4 GTransfers/second. Miller would provide no additional details about the new Cascade design or the status of the talks with DARPA.

"This collaboration [with Intel] provides the high performance computing market segment with access to the best microprocessors the industry has to offer at any point in time," said Peter Ungaro, chief executive of Cray in a prepared statement.
