You're probably right. If I didn't have a real job, I'd be sitting on newegg hitting F5 every 30 seconds lol

I didn't argue it was practical, only possible. ;)

Do you really think a regular gamer is looking to buy an entire pallet?

I didn't buy a pallet, I bought two cards. I feel it was a great deal too. Don't be afraid to look for used cards, just make sure you "know" the source, and it isn't some random goober.

And on eBay, watch out for sellers offering 1080 Ti's and Vega 64's for $59.99. Yes, there are plenty out there. If that's not bad enough, there are plenty that have been purchased at those prices.

Anyone who is dumb enough to buy a $60 1080ti deserves to be parted with their money....:shadedshu: thats beyond dumb, thats some next level $h!t.

That's the same kind of person who would buy a rock from somebody who told them it was a tiger repellent. And then they would assume it was working ,because they didn't see any Tigers ...failing to realize tigers arent very common in Wisconsin.( only guaranteed to workoutside of zoos within the contiguous United States ):slap:

I would never be so stupid to fall for such a gimmick. On an entirely unrelated matter ,I got a couple more stickers for my PC case, ones an Intel ,and the other ones an Nvidia sticker, performance has increased exponentially. Now my PC looks like a hippies car bumper, but im loving the added performance

Nvidia's don't mine as good right? Which means most AMD will be borked from minning.

As long as people are willing to pay it the market will set the prices. That said, I mine and haven't paid a dime over MSRP for any card including a 1080ti I purchased from a big online retailer just last week. It takes some patience and persistence but it's not like the vendors aren't building cards or that stores aren't getting stock. And for the people that would rather pay double MSRP from a flipper rather than put a little effort into finding them in-stock, I guess that's just down to what people consider their time is worth. Personally I think these people buying 1080ti's for $1500 or a 1060 for $500 must have money to blow to do that. Once they quit buying them for outrageous prices they will come back to Earth.

In theory eventually vendors will ramp-up production to meet demand, which will also bring prices back down.

And when that happens, more miners will buy the cards, destroying PC gaming again.

It probably won't stop until GPU manufacturers can predict the mining market (which seems unlikely). The game gpu market could be predicted, and they rarely had to worry about overstock/understock/etc.. Mining just threw a big rusty monkey wrench into the whole thing.

That this could have easily been added to any other thread hating on mining that is currently active.
Except I didn't intend this just as a rant thread as you seem to think. It's intended to provoke some thought as to solutions to the problem. So "Thoughts?" means what do you think of my suggestion, and/or what if any ideas do others have to combat it, not what do you think of bit mining. Either way though, the thread is already 4 pages long, so it hardly seems a waste of space as you imply.

As said in another thread, I just grabbed a pair of 1080ti's and didn't pay anything over used value as if life was normal.
Happily gaming, not affected by mining or the "price hike!" It can be done, or I wouldn't have upgraded ;)
Yet you didn't even mention where you bought them or for how much. Some of us prefer to buy new and from trusted vendors that have great service and return policy. For me that's B&H Photo lately. I bought an EVGA 1080 Ti FTW3 about a month ago from them when it went on sale for $770. Now it's well over $100 more than that. I ended up returning it due to problems with 4K in general and HDR. Granted it was no fault of EVGA or B&H, but they were nothing but professional and understanding during the process, and I will definitely buy from them again. To imply availability and pricing hasn't been affected by mining though, is yet another one of your extreme exaggerations. You're clearly in denial.

Whoa, mining damaging the economy? I don't think so. High end GPUs being out of stock doesn't constitute economy damage...
For now, it's at the very least effecting the gaming economy, globally, and if it continues, since gaming is THE largest grossing entertainment industry, yes, it could actually to some degree even affect the overall economy.

How many threads do we need. Stop panicking it will end. Its been like one month
When's the last time you saw the 1070 regularly dropped to $380? I think it's been much more than a month.

what do you think of my suggestion

You don't really want to know... but since you asked...

Technologically unfeasible? Check.
Unenforceable? Check.
Bitcoin would never ever comply? Check
People don't mine bitcoin with GPUs anymore anyhow, but mine other various coins and trade for it? Double triple frickin check.

EDIT: That came across meaner than I intended, sorry. Ideas are good. I want ideas. I want an answer. This one just won't work though, honestly. :(

See my edit. Even I admitted that came across too harsh. I left it up because I own up to my mistakes and don't hide from them.

It depends on the card. 1070's have been affected much longer than say, 1080's.

I look at it more as what cards are mainstream, because those are the ones most buy. This is a how long has mining affected gaming in genral issue, not how long has it affected the top 10% that buy expensive GPUs.

Anyway, I feel this thread has gone WAY off topic from it's intent of stirring thoughts on solutions to the problem. If this continues I have no problem with it being locked, and it won't be out of my making another dime a dozen thread as implied. It will be due to people just not paying attention to the specifics and question in the original post, or caring enough to offer constructive ideas. Anyone can rant or engage in off topic small talk, that's not the intent here.

Too many posters are mocking, yet offering up no intelligent ideas themselves. I used to think this was the most civil of tech forums, but for some time now it's been going way downhill. It's not for lack of intelligent members, it's more due to lack of restraint.

I don't think many people know how to solve this. The person who does will be someone not even related to tech or GPUs or mining. It'll be someone specializing in inventory. Perhaps a "genius" in it. If there is such a thing. Right now, it's set up for one specific type of customer. Now there's a new one...who is unpredictable...yet needs to be taken account anyhow.

Which proves my point, it's been much more than a month, and it literally ruined holiday upgrades and builds for a lot of people. Worse yet, there's no sign of it ending anytime soon.

Yes, it did suck for gamers and still does. What changed in mid-November? This is mostly to blame... along with the rest of the crypto craze

Yes, it did suck for gamers and still does. What changed in mid-November? This is mostly to blame... along with the rest of the crypto craze

View attachment 96425

that is exactly what happened in November early december.. .. gpu mining suddenly became profitable again.. i even started a thread titled exactly that.. "mining has become profitable again"..

its dropped off a bit because the price of eth has gone down and the difficulty has gone up.. it wasnt just eth that when up the ripple craze fed it as well.. but as the price of gpu minable coins shot up so did the profit from mining them and so did the demand for gpus..

i have mined eth since early December when nicehash got hacked.. i mine with 10 x 1070 cards.. with eth down where its at now i am seeing £30 US dollars per day.. a couple of weeks back i was seeing $50 US dollars per day or $1500 US dollars per month.. that is exactly why the price of gpus are where they are now..

the future is a tad unpredictable but i expect eth after a sideways pause to shoot up again in february.. i dont think the gpus situation is going to ease for quite some time..

I agree with that. We could use a dedicated idea thread and I appologize for my part in the derailment.

You didn't even mention where you bought your 1080 Tis from, or for how much.

Where I got them and for how much is something I prefer not to go public with. Let's just say a friend, and for half what I see them going for anywhere else.
I am sorry you live under a rock and have to have something brand new, but I trust where I got the cards, and why pay a premium just for new car smell? Warranty is meh to me anyways!
I never said it did not affect those without the ability to hunt, I am simply stating, affordable solutions are out there, you just have to spend as much time looking as you do complaining;)
Also, how is it I am exaggerating ( I have the cards, I know what I paid) , and in denial (I know the reality I have a pair of brand new to me cards)!

Last bit, your thread is four pages, but the majority of what has been said here is also found in all the other threads ;)
