You adding that you are using that cable was like dropping a bomb. I'd look at the cable as the cause, as many others suggest.

That may help. Do you have a stock intel cooler lying around? So you can take the board out to test it on the bench with both cards to make sure they work. Otherwise your cutting into that case may be a serious waste of time and money.

Also the thermalright cooler on the 5870 will need to have its orientation changed in order for the 5970 to be mounted above it in the primary slot. Please get rid of the extension cable as it is most likely the cause of the problem and has the potential to damage that card the way its mounted.
