I've never used crossfire, but i'm building a new PC in the spring and was wondering if I could mix my r9 280x with a r9 fury in crossfire.

nop.
7950, 7970, 280 and 280x are only possible options for you.
dont waste time with cf. if you need more gpu power sell that 280x and buy single most powerful card you can afford. cf/sli is too much trouble for questionable gains.

I disagree with the "questionable gains" part, when it works it is realy good. BUT i would also get the best single card you can get your hands on now, so that when the upgrade bug bites in 6 months it will be comparatively cheap to add another card for some extra FPS.

i'll just stick with a single R9 Fury then, should be sufficient anyway since my monitor is 1920x1200.

If i upgrade to a 1440p or 4k i'll consider a second card, by the time I do a new single card will probably be faster than adding a second r9 fury anyway for not much more $.

but it works 95 % of the time
if you say so
i'll give you fresh example. https://steamcommunity.com/app/292030/discussions/0/613958868368793530/, https://community.amd.com/thread/183025. look at the date of the posts. if you remember witcher 3 was published 19.05.2015.
so 7-30 day till it start so work at the mean time here at tpu in witcher 3 thread we have ppl finished the game on 25th of May. 4 6 days after release! at mean time you are still sitting on your hands waiting for cf profile/fix/workaround.
if you have 4k+ monitor cf/sli is the way to go but for single 1200p monitor capped at 60hz cf is waste of money and unnecessary headache.

single fury(X) should be sufficient till 1600p unless you really want to play with AA maxed out.

Dual cards are not without their problems, but for me personally there have been very little problems. Maybe because i rarely by games at launch and wait until they have dropped a bit in price.

I usually keep AA at 4x anyway. It'd be cool to max it out, but not a necessity.

Crossfire is not a good idea. Amd is slow with profiles and half the time the profile isn't very good. Plus crossfire loves to stutter
