Greetings,

Last week I picked up a 18.5 viewable lcd monitor to add to my 25inch crt as a 2nd monitor & was so blown away by it that I took it back & ordered a larger one to use as a primary monitor. I do have a few questions. The games I ran on the lcd when I had it ran amazing. I ran AOC in directx 10 with little to no graphic lag..which I'm unable to do on my crt..fps drops like a stone..why was this? Any ideas? Also I've always heard that CRTs were better for gaming which is why I still have one but I was totally shocked by how stuff ran. Can anyone fill me in?

Thanks!

Up until just recently I have liked CRTs a lot better than LCDs, however LCD technology has come a long way in a fairly short amount of time (providing more color, faster refresh time, etc).

Basically CRTs at one point were better in quality over LCDs, but now it is no competition.

Edit: Does anyone else get sleepy when they use LCD screens for large amounts of time vs CRTs? (Strange question)

Unless you play FPS games, then CRT's are still better ;) .. ofcourse, if you dont mind carrying a 26kg monitor around (I dont mind ^_-)
Maybe in a years time or two, LCDs can rival CRTs on FPS games, but not yet.

The fact that CRTs can output higher resolution than most LCDs is the main cause.
You have 2 512MB cards in SLI, but the problem is 512MB starts to become a problem in higher resolutions.

The most significant advantages I can think of for CRTs is higher Resolution and more accurate Colors.
In terms of resposne time, the difference between CRT and LCD for even FPS games are not noticeable on newer LCDs.

It's not a strange question. I'm gettin' sleepy all the time while browsin' the net. When i'm gaming... well that's a different story.

The biggest downside to LCDs, is that they look terrible at any resolution other than their native res. Other than that, I find my LCD to be much better than CRTs. (Not to mention, CRTs give me a headache)

Benchmark Scores I don't benchmark.
I am confused. I read all the post and I see people have a divided option on this. The way I recall it.

Color accuracy: LCD by far. Has never been a competition

Power consumption: Dido

Resolution: LCD in the last few years, due to CRT technology not being developed or improved. P.S. If you LCD quality level has a huge drop in clarity because it is not in its native resolution, then the resolution scaler is crap. This hasn't been an issue for most LCD for 2 years.

Cost: CRT because it is older tech.

Response time: 8ms being the magic number for you not ghosting or lagging in FPS. CRT for many years, but has become a mutt point in recent years.

Overall: LCD all the way, hands down. Just get one of good quality and don't skimp $20 for a brand you never heard of. CRT is dead and we should all let it rest in peace.

BS, even with the best scaler in the world, it still looks like crap compared to native res, period. It loses is sharpness and detail, no matter what you do.

I think the better CRT screens are still better for image quality, but nothing is more annoying than having a lamp, window or other light source in the background...

HUH? :wtf: way off. Alot of graphics pros still use CRT's because the black levels and color accuracy are way better on a crt. Refresh rates are better too from what i've seen. Actually I just bought a 22inch 1080p LCD. Kept it for 3 days and took it back. The slight improvement over my 19 inch viewsonic CRT was definitely not worth the 300 bucks. I wont say CRT's are better because they are at the level of CRTs IF you pay enough. For 300 bucks though, IMO my money could be spent much better elsewhere. Blacks were washy unless you got at JUST the perfect height. If I slouched in my chair the least bit i'd have to adjust the up and down swivel. And it was a pretty nice HP monitor too. I liked it alot and I loved being able to plug my xbox 360 into the HDMI and play in my chair, but it just wasnt worth the money.

And +1 to non-native res's looking terribad on LCD's.

PS. Take my comments with a grain of salt. I will probably always be a CRT fanboy. I still use a giant 56" CRT projection screen as my gaming TV, CRT monitors for my computer, and I have a HUGE Electrohome Marquee 8000 8-inch crt (the bulbs are 8 inch, not the screen) CRT projector that could probably run a small movie theatre. 250" screen max res 2500x1200 FTW! Take that! 1200p! And you thought your 1080p LCD's were nice...

You had a Tn-Film panel. The worst of the bunch for color, viewing angles and accuracy.

Try a monitor with an S or M PVA panel or S or H IPS panel, and come back and say the same.

Not to mention, the way CRTs refresh strain the hell out of many people's eyes (mine included) and give a terrible headache.

True, but no where near as bad as it was 2 to 3 years ago.

Thanks for the varied responces guys/gals. Question..with the one I"m getting it's got a 5m responce time..do I need to worry about ghosting? Or is that anything above 8m?

CRTs still tend to have better and more natural colors but it is hard to find a good CRT being made new anymore.

Other than that and refresh rates there really is nothing else going for CRTs anymore and LCDs have gotten so much better now you might as well go LCD.

Just don't get one with a TN panel, they look like crap.

My Viewsonic is a TN I believe and it is horrendous compared to my Dell.

No, CRT response time is about 6ms. An LCD with a 6ms or less response time should have little to no ghosting.

As long as the response time is 8 ms or less (true response time not GTG), then you will be fine. GTG stands for Grey to Grey which some manufactures claim "Is a more accurate representation of what the monitor will doing while being used". True, but horse shit when talking spec.

If the LCD has 5ms response, ghosting will never be the monitors fault, unless it is broken.

The top crt's can still better a top lcd for pixel size & color representation. I own a few high end 21" sony chassie crt's. Acquired them almost for free from a local car component design company that has shut up shop. Saw them on ebay. I was the only bidder !

My best is a Sony CPD-G520P 21". Games running at 2048x1536 on this monitor look amazing ! But then this crt would have cost around £580/$850 when new . These days that kind of money would buy a cracking 22 or 24" LCD.

Software Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Benchmark Scores I don't benchmark.
Well ultimately, my issue would be I can see the slight blink to the light in a CRT and/or the scan lines during refreshes. As such, they give me chronic headaches. I will admit the resolution is much higher than any LCD I have seen at the same size, but it would be hard to perceive the difference in a side by side comparison to an LCD at 1080p.

Maybe it is just the brand and quality level of CRT's I have been exposed to, but I have to see one come even remotely close to my LCD in color accuracy and clarity.

Crt's do give most people a headache or saw eyes if the refresh rate is set to low. The recommendation is a refresh rate no lower than 75htz. 85 is better if your monitor will have it. 85htz or above is pretty much flicker free so shouldnt give you a headache or eye strain.

LCD's don't strobe like crt's so they are usaully ok at just 60htz.

I used to love CRTs (I still have a 1999 21" Sony Trinitron GDM-500PS aperture grille CRT), but ever since my dad gave me his 3 year old Samsung SyncMaster 940BW LCD, there's no going back. I used to get headaches a lot from my Sony, even at 85-100Hz.

CRTs can get out of focus sooner or later, have color problems or one of the color electron guns fails, the flyback transformer shorts out and dies, develop weird banding at certain resolutions and refresh rates, etc. With LCDs, everything is pretty much solid-state and computer controlled, they take less power and space, and they look great at native resolution. No need to take off your cover and adjust pots, risk your life with the energized flyback wire, risk imploding the tube, have a couple pounds of mercury and heavy metals in your screen, or get exposed to the radiation that CRTs supposedly generate (according to the stickers inside).

Of course, most of these problems are worse-case scenario, but there seems to be more possible problems with CRTs than LCDs.
