Trying to determine which is a better drive for my uses. This will be a secondary drive, mainly for games. Both will be 2TB models.

My motherboard is an ASRock X370 Killer SLI/ac.

Specs here.

It has two M.2 slots:
- 1 Ultra M.2 (PCIe Gen3 x4 & SATA3)
- 1 M.2 (PCIe Gen2 x2 & SATA3)

I have the choice of getting a Crucial P1 2TB (QLC, NVMe) or MX500 2TB (TLC, SATA). P1 is $10 cheaper. Other options are outside of my budget.

In the future I plan to move the P1 into the PCIe Gen 2 slot and will get a faster TLC NVMe drive as a boot drive (probably a Crucial P5 or WD SN550) in the PCIe Gen 3 slot.

Which is where the question comes in. In the PCIe Gen 2 slot, with lets say up to 75-80% filled, will the Crucial P1 offer inferior performance to the Crucial MX500?

The P1 2TB is double sided, so make sure it will fit before you commit.
Heat will also be an issue due to that.

Check P1 review on Anandtech. In some cases it's even slower than MX500.

What price are you getting it at? If in the US the Intel 665p is being sold at a killer price, 1TB for only $82 :wtf:

You can get two of them so in terms of NVMe SSDs, if endurance isn't a huge concern, it's the best VFM option out there IMO.

Seems to be the case when filled, at least in some situations. Hopefully it will still give better performance overall when at a moderate capacity. Might consider swapping it for the MX500 2TB, that was $10 more.

Was $186 shipped.
