Hi all.
Been running my Ace Mcgee Crysis mods recently. When I found myself at z24 I noticed some tearing and framedrops down to the 40's. Not good.

OK, So I run this older engine in dozens of mods with OTT settings. But that realistic look is what I crave. It's the best in realism and this engine is ten years old.

No graphs (although it's possible if requested). Sorry all. I run very high AI tweaks, custom cvars and eye-adaptation, so unless you use my .cfg stuff it can't be graphed (Not a repeatable experiment).

However I thought I'd share with the gaming community my discoveries...

DSR is clearly the winner - 1:2 with 33% smoothing.

My reasoning: It looks natural and the sharpness is touchable. And I'm actually getting better framerates with no AA whatsoever. Once the pre-cache fills, I'm totally locked at 59-61FPS. (as set in gpu tweak).
I can't see any aliasing or shimmer on a 24" 1080 IPS screen. Joyous gaming.

Hope this assists someone in experimenting with their GPU.

What i don't like with DSR is that if game doesn't know how to scale GUI elements, everything becomes stupendously tiny and almost impossible to read. Only few games auto scale GUI and HUD to compensate for size.

Good evening.
I get what you say. I personally care little for story and hud. I'm adding information to this great forum.
Some gamers love realism and the sight of the forest, the shadows, the brightness of the sky, the ground and water and the realistic combat as if it is really happening.
You're a great writer and poster BTW.

Err. I only posted my personal observation on getting something extra from a decade-long game engine.

Sorry, im a metrics/must be tangible person. Without screenshots to show IQ differences or fps counters at same scene type thing... its not for me. Thanks for sharing though. :)

Edit: i forgot everything on the web is true... my apologies. Hehe... :)

I personally prefer SMAA. It has a higher edge smoothing and less blur than FXAA, it's still very cheap to use, doesn't have corner rounding that MLAA has and no scaling issues with GUI/HUD's. It's an all around winner. What I don't understand is why AMD and NVIDIA don't replace (or add SMAA) instead of their MLAA and FXAA which are both inferior in their Control Panels and yet they both seem to insist on either for years.

Most games use FXAA because it's basically free to use, but ANYONE could afford a penalty of SMAA. Losing 2-3fps more for highly superior filtering method would just be a win. And if you could force it via graphic card control panel and have FXAA disabled in game settings, that would be much better.

As for saying "I don't care about story etc". When you'll have problems using even basic things to navigate through a game, I already see that as a problem (because controls will be so tiny). DSR also has quite some problems with refresh rate. I've had several games that, after using DSR insisted on running at 60Hz even though the output is still just 1080p and should be running at 144Hz. It was a huge no no for me. Only good thing about DSR is that apart from older games where resolutions range is often hardcoded or limited (and refuses to go to 4K), you can select it in any game. Unlike MSAA which basically doesn't work in any game anymore.

Hey Dog. A little new at this (as in don't know what I'm doing). I've uploaded 9 images via the image upload feature. Names are self-explanatory. If you want to see my cvars, just ask.

@Rosie Scenario I figured I'd help. You obviously found the image uploader feature on TPU main page, because you had the url from there. To finish up, COPY the url, then go to your message in the forum and click on the "Landscape" icon above your draft post. PASTE the image url in there and click "Insert." The image will now go to wherever your cursor is. :)

Never been to Louisana. How hot is it down there? Driven Chicago-LA in a white Dodge Intrepid, following the red desert and the Colorado. Scrunched my heals in D.Valley, sunburned my face off in utah and managed to survive Mexico too (just).

Winters (December, January and February) are beautiful with about 20 nights below freezing, highs around 50 to 60. Summers, which started a couple weeks ago I stay indoors as much as possible. I have an aversion to heat and humidity. Been here 20 years. Time for me to go back to Vermont.

You're from Vermont (basically Canada) and live 1000 miles south? I'm in England so I can appreciate getting a little sunshine, but not going out at-all during the hot season must mean you're going to become addicted to PC gaming;)

Already am, my friend. Kids are grown and few expenses now.

Anywho, way off topic. So those Crysis shots are all done with DSR on?

Nope. Examine the filenames. 2 each of DSR, MFAA, FXAA - As requested by EarthDog. Additional shots of NCP to look at settings.

I cant really see a difference at all... what differences I can see, can quite possibly be from the slightly different angles in each picture. That is a problem with IQ testing is it has to be at literally the EXACT same spot of things change (angle of lighting, AA jaggies can be less/more.. etc.

Is there anything in those images which stick out to you that I can look at?

Hey Dog. Agree with your obsevations. If you check my OP I did mention this comparison was pretty diificult. It's all about that fluidity and the way the grass and leaves move in the wind, the sun hits you for a second, things like that.
All I can offer you and the other thread viewers is my .cfg and the NCP settings in the shots.

**Edit**- FXAA is blurry when you look carefully. MFAA is great on the framerate but there's something lost in the realism.

FXAA uses a blur filter to blur the edges along gradients but it blurs textures a bit too. It is the least taxing form of AA and that's why it's used often in console games.
