NVIDIA GPU based video cards have no real-world gameplay differences between DX9 and DX10, so there is no reason not to run in DX10. AMD ATI GPU based video cards do suffer a performance penalty for using DX10. If you are running an NVIDA GPU based video card, continue to run in DX10, but if you are running an AMD ATI GPU based video card you might want to consider running in DX9 for the best Crysis experience.

This is probably wrong... my ATI card runs at the same performance in DX10 as DX9

That's wierd, that hasn't been my experience at all with my 8800GTS and DX9/10? Huh?!

But is your experience with DX9 under XP and DX10 under Vista? Their comparison was done on Vista for both.

They state that nvidia GPUs are just as good in DX10 as it is in DX9 based on one game, Crysis. Now if they were talking about just Crysis, fine so be it. When will people learn to stop sporting their reviews. :shadedshu

I used to like [H], but recently they have become a bit green. First their "New (subjective) Reviews" and now their mis-information about ATI cards. :shadedshu

My friend who has a G80 8800gts suffers the same performance drop when running Crysis in DX10 vs. DX 9 in Vista as I do with my 2900pro/xt.

Biased, just too biased. I think [H] don't even know what they're yacking about anymore. Even with my 9800gtx I can get 42 fps in DX9 Crysis while the same setup gets 34 fps in DX10.

It's what's being implied in the conclusion of the review, didn't you read it? You did quote part of it. One game cannot properly represent any tangible litmus between other games using DX10 vs DX9. It's already common knowledge that:
-no other popular game will use that engine
-how the game is coded is questionable
-they are already working on crytek 2 engine (or whatever they are calling it)
Some who have those video cards are reporting differences between DX9 and D10 in that game therefore, it debunks their findings. And another thing, if you want a true DX9 experience you would use DX9.0c from XP. That would allow you to gauge the differences between the two.

Here, learn some truth about this game. It never was and never will be a true DX10 title. Therefore, it shouldn't be the poster child of DX10 gaming.

My point was that you'd know it was only Crysis if you clicked the link. I forgot to mention it in the title, but it's been changed now (thanks, erocker).

In addition to what I've already posted, Crysis is given a little more "benchmarking" attention then what it deserves when comparing DX9 vs DX10. There are no other future note worth games lined up to use the engine (that I have found). Also, they are still attempting to update/patch the game. There comes a time when you simply move on IMO. I don't see this much attention with games like World In Conflict, Company of Heroes: Opposing Forces, Medal of Honor : Airborne, etc which all note worthy games that are GPU taxing in their own right.

I'm not behind the comparison. No use arguing about its shortcomings to me. If you want to join in the discussion, there's a comments link at the end of the comparison. One of your posts implied thatt the comparison wasn't valid because it was done on one game. I simply wanted to clarify that it was done only for Crysis.

I don't usually check out [H], but pretty much all I have seen when it comes to graphic card reviews, I see them usually bashing ATi. Is this true? Do they favour (sp?) Nvidia?

As far as I can tell, the performance DX9 vs DX10 in Vista under crysis for me IS different. I get a little more FPS in DX9, and horrible input-lag in DX10 for some reason. I use a 8800GT.

No. They don't bash anyone unless they file lawsuits against them. :D

I've been there for four years and I haven't witnessed any bias or favoring of a particular company over another. Well, Kyle and Steve don't really like Apple. That's about the extent though.

After reading the article, the only thing that I can say is:

Guys, READ and try to understand the article, then comment.

If anyone bothered to read the article, you would know that they are having 10% less performance on DX10 than on Vista, but that doesn't let them use higher settings on DX9, and for them if you can't use higher settings and it's playable on both, then there's no difference. It's how they benchmark.

So where are the pretty DX10 Crysis graphics promised? They can be found in the “Very High” settings, but unfortunately... *yawn*

Even the IQ screenshots are different resolutions and they plastered text on some of the interesting bits of the pictures... rofl

Nice article. I couldn't get through the first paragraph without choking.

Similar to its predecessor, FarCry, this game was and still is looked upon by gamers as more than just a fun first-person shooter

It isn't fun (for more than a couple hours). I would also say it's barely looked upon by gamers at all for any reason. According to Gamespy, http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/, as I write this there are 439 people playing the game online. Look out CS, you have some competition. It's even worse if you consider there are 359 servers for those folks to choose from which gives you 1.22 players per server.

Crysis is one of the first games to be built from the ground up with Microsoft’s DirectX 10 in mind.

They started development on Crysis long before M$ had released DX10 specs or solid guidelines let alone any actual code. So if the groundwork for the game was laid before DX10 was provided to them, how can it be built on DX10 from the ground up?

Knowing that this game fully supports DX10, this game was supposed to drive home the importance of DX10 to gamers.

And what exactly is the criteria for "fully supporting DX10" anyway? I think it's just as simple as if you use a DX10 instruction, it has to work. Even if it's just one statement. Think about that. You wouldn't have to support EVERY DX10 ability just to say you're a DX10 title. How much of DX10 does Crysis actually use? How much of what it uses DX10 for could also be done with DX9?

Well, it hasn’t quite lived up to everyone’s expectations.

Who is everyone and have they checked with everyone to see if it actually fell short with every single person?

I'll grant you that last bit may be a little picky but it is indicative of the kind of grandiose statements made by reviewers all over the world to impress their opinion on you. They say things like "everyone thinks this" when, in fact, all they done is read other reviews and ask their friends just like everyone else does (ROFL).

One last quote:

Should you be playing Crysis in DX9...

They go on to talk about how it should be tested and performance and what not. First of all, they should have just asked- Should you be playing Crysis? and left it at that. The simple answer to that question is no. There isn't anything to say after that and the article would end.

So, enough of this silliness about Crysis. It has fewer ACTIVE online players than the original DEMO VERSION of Halo and has more bugs, map issues, weapon balance problems and net code issues than anything we should allow to be called a game.

Let's talk about something much more interesting. Like me!

Who wants an autograph?

I like and enjoy playing the game.

Its all about preference. Claiming an answer to a question such as "Should you be playing Crysis in DX9?" and saying no is like saying "Should I eat bread and not like it?" and saying no.

If DX9 looks great for you and means it won't lagg for you than your probably going to play Crysis in DX9. However if DX10 is smooth for ya, then you'ed probably being playing it in DX10.
