Just like the CoD4 thread that's buzzing, I agree with Aphex that it comes to user preference...if I need my Crysis fix...the demo is a-plenty for me atm. I love CoD4 and still play it quite a bit, both are great games and FPS games will improve from here, hopefully improving on previous flaws...I mean, compare the AI, graphics, physics, shadows, and gameplay to a game like Quake (first one) or Doom (first one)...things not only have changed a lot in many perspectives, but have improved drastically...

I see Palit_guy's perspective also, and had actually thought the same thing when reading through what I could stand in that article. Doesn't mean Crysis is a bad game, but in my mind it won't be remembered as a great game...it'll be remembered as a game that was more of a benchmark than a game for most...at least how I've seen it, and those I know that play or used to. Nothing wrong with that...hell Oblivion had that reign for quite a while, was still a decent game, but it was definately a benchmark for quite a long time...gotta have those kind of games out there that nobody can play maxed out...I think it's just another way to keep gamers upgrading to get that extra bit of eye-candy and AA/AF, and it works. That may not be the goal...who knows...but in the end, I know a lot of people and a lot of threads were made in a lot of forums about people building new rigs just to play Crysis, and sadly most were dissapointed by overall performance, now in generation or two of graphics technology improvements...Crysis will be a walk in the park for mid-range cards...it's not really that bad in performance anymore...unless you wanna see all maxed, super-hi resolutions and max AA/AF.

It's all good though, there will be those that love/hate any game, for any reason, and in the end all that really matters is not the flaming from those that hate it or dislike it...but how much you enjoy it or not. It is good to see more diversity in similar genre's though...even if some are dissapointing, getting different ideas out to gamers is definately a plus in my mind.

I enjoy Crysis. Multiplayer is a bit slow though, but it is fun driving vehicles and being able to transport other people.

Alas, this thread isn't about Crysis being good or bad. It's about DX9 vs. DX10 using Crysis.

For sure, I liked it too.

Is that a Freudian slip I see when you said "using" it instead of playing it?

I like your topic though I wish it used a different example. I want so bad to have a game that doesn't suck AND brings to reality what DX10 is capable of on paper. Whether Crysis plays better under DX9 or DX10 is still kind of overshadowed by the lousiness of the game in general.

Again, I liked playing it, too. Sometimes we even show it on our demo systems because it looks so pretty, even though I protest it. But even M$ doesn't use it as a poster child for what DX10 can do. Given the sad state of affairs with Vista I think they would latch onto any opportunity possible to promote anything that would help with Vista sales.

I don't know anyone who gets the same framerates in DX9 and DX10. Everyone I know loses performance in DX10 NVidia or ATi, it doesn't matter.

NVIDIA GPU based video cards have no real-world gameplay differences between DX9 and DX10

Might be true if you're testing both DX9 (high) and DX10 (very high) under Vista.

However it certainly doesn't hold water in the case of XP.

Using the Crysis Benchmarking Tool, high settings under XP give me 45 fps average, whereas tweaked settings for very high gave me 28.5 fps average.

Quite interesting!

First is 8800 GTX at 1600 * 1200 with 41.8 fps
Second is HD 3870 at 1280 * 1024 with 42.3 fps

Looks like a 8800 GTX is so much faster than HD 3870 that it runs at higher resolution with same framerate, but:

Tris on 8800 GTX: 734,980
Tris on HD 3870: 982,710

...isn't that a poly count or something like that?

What exactly did those Nvidia-People do, when they assisted CryTek optimizing this game? Did they build an automatic quality reducement for Nvidia-Cards to hide bad performance?

Not to mention the missing details on 8800 GTX screenie. Road looks very strange to me.

@ all game companies: please do no optimizing for my card!!!

EDIT: Guess these cards run with different configs. One million tris per frame is about 80% of all settings high. Maybe GTX runs with all settings at middle.

Nice article. I couldn't get through the first paragraph without choking.

It isn't fun (for more than a couple hours). I would also say it's barely looked upon by gamers at all for any reason. According to Gamespy, http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/, as I write this there are 439 people playing the game online. Look out CS, you have some competition. It's even worse if you consider there are 359 servers for those folks to choose from which gives you 1.22 players per server.?

I agree 100%, I think that people over analyze this game, and obsess over FPS,use it as a benchmark, etc..

I think the bottom line is this.

#1 the game is pretty. After you get to the beach. its fun to play with the water, it IS pretty amazing. playing with the water, and throwing barrels is about the only plus's in my mind about the game. this only gets you so much gameplay.

#2 I think this engine would have made a HELL of a Vietnam or Pacific theater WWII realism game. (my opinion here, but im so tired of the "future" bio suits, aliens, robots, that i want to vomit, to me its exciting to try and relive somthing from the past.)

#3 performance wise the game runs good for me,
Im only running a dfi dark p35 with a Xeon 3110@4.05ghz (500fsb,ram 1:1)
with 4 gig g.skill ddr-1000,
PALIT 8800gt sonic 1gb editon.
WD 640 AAKS drive. No raid.

This thread has a nice collection of examples why I ignore [H].
And, they used beta drivers for an article like this?!

I think this is funny, People aren't even really playing crysis, they just use it to bench these days that's all it's really good for, since most people can barely run it. I personally like the game, but it's not really playable for me. Maybe with the new nvidia/Ati series comes out, I might upgrade so I can do a play through, but for me before I sold my g92 cards, I didn't notice any drop in performance from dx9 vs dx10
