I have been arguing with myself for a little over 2 of months now if I should try AMD's Zen 2 CPU more specific the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X or Ryzen 9 3900X because I could use at least 2 more cores not for gaming but for convertions I do from time to time but also to statisfy my curiosity to try some new tech in my life and AMD Zen 2 might be the answer here because all the good things I been reading and hear about AMD Zen 2.

Since Intel is just milking the old Skylake archetechture with yet another refresh from time to time and next gen will require a motherboard change anyway why not just extract some value out of my Intel Core i7-8086K and AsRock Z370 Taichi while they are still worth something?

I was thinking about the following combo:
AMD Ryzen 7 3800X (Is gonna be watercooled by the Fractal Design Celsius S24 I am using now).
MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC (VRM is the same as MSI's X470 Gaming Plus just with a bigger heatsink on).

My reason for a B450 chipset motherboard is that I don't need dual gpu support, PCI-E 4.0, or anything fancy the X570 chipset offers since my GTX 1080 Ti FE Hybrid doesn't care if it's running in a PCI-E x16 3.0 or 4.0 slot and onboard Realtek even the ALC1220 onboard my current board can't even drive my Audio-Technica A550Z headphones because all sounds sound low and doll so I got a Creative SoundBlaster Z I use anyways.

I would have like to buy a B550 chipset board since that chipset is made for the Zen 2 CPU's but it still won't have PCI-E 4.0 so a B450 is still fine plus there is no release date as far as I know other then 2019 Q4/2020 Q1 as stated in the article here on TPU: ASMedia-sourced AMD B550, A520 Chipset Motherboards Arrive in 2020

A little note about the last AMD CPU I owned:
The last AMD CPU I owned was a AMD Opteron 146 on Socket 939 that overclocked well and was awesome experience expect for the Asus A8N32 SLI Deluxe motherboard that was DOA so I got a AsRock 939Dual-SATA2 board with PCI-E and AGP that was the days of fun having both new and old options on the same board .

@puma99dk| It is a nice board to have but I will suggest that you go with a 570 board. Reason being is if you use a NVME M2 drive you lose 2 of your sata slots, your specs show 6 drives and if you are going to reuse them all it may be an issue. Also if you go with a PCI-E M2 slot you lose a lot of functionality there as well. If you are going to run just 4 sata drives and the M2 slot you should be fine. I have the Tomahawk b450 with my 2700 and pretty happy with it.

@flmatter I am aware of the SATA lose I am dealing with it on Z370 at the moment I got 2 of my WD drives a Red and a Purple in 2xOrico USB 3.0 inclosures because they acutally perform identical as if they are connected to the Intel SATA 3 Controller so I will be fine with the B450 but thank you for the concern about the limitation also using a NVME drive :) (Also I don't have space in my case for more drives).

I run my Plex of a WD Purple 4TB I got dirty cheap second handed that was never opened.

I recently did a similar sidegrade - from an 8700k -> 9700k. The 9700k dropped to $299 at Microcenter (and still is, if you happen to live near one), and I decided that an 8/8 setup sounded better than a 6/12 for future-proofing. Meh.

Actually sold the 8700k for $325 on eBay (meaning it probably cost me $30-40 after taxes on the new chip and ebay fees) and all was looking good, but despite my diligence, I still nearly fell victim to a professional ebay scammer. Ebay made things right in the end, but if that's how you're planning to recoup costs, it's not without risk.

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
I wouldn't do it. The extra 2 cores for conversions are not worth unless you're sitting there watching the progress bar (im usualy making a coffee or something).

You're going to lose a lot of speed in and gain a almost double your latency in games and lose maybe ~10% on the .01% lows (you're going to notice it @165hz) for maybe a 20%/25% boost on a long running task.

Maybe if you go 3900x or 3950x on a b550 i can see it being worthwhile, but I wouldn't go 3800x, that seems like the worst of all the zen 2 chips.

Haha me and my brain, I have only slept like 6hours the last 2 days because of personal reasons, It was just my understand that PCI-E 4.0 would be exclusive for the X570 chipset even with B550 being released 2019 Q4/2020 Q1 but been getting so much information in my head not all can stick with my bad memory. But as I wrote my GTX 1080 Ti FE Hybrid doesn't care about PCI-E 4.0 and I am not gonna buy another SSD I am happy with my Samsung 970 Evo 500GB and my Samsung 850 1TB SATA SSD is as my game library.

The only way forward as @phanbuey suggested is a 3900X or 3950X, otherwise there's no point to replacing your 8086K with the 5 GHz OC.

After the latest FW modded by @R-T-B I been running stock didn't bother to type in the settings again this is me being lazy because the only game I been having fun with is Spyro Reignited Trilogy

The latest rumours says that X3950 might be late I don't know, plus the price for a 3900X is about £120/150USD more then the 3800X.

MSI doesn't seem to think that their X470 and B450s can handle a 3950X, 3900X is on the list over supported CPUs. Any ways with the availability in Denmark for 3900X two mouths after release close to zero I have low hopes for 3950X before next year.

I don't know where you got that MSI doesn't seem to think their B450 doesn't support 3900X because bios 7B85v17 for the B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC lists the support for 3900X:

I'm not sure I'd go with the latest chipset, at least not right away. You just don't know if you're going to end up with a bad edition until they get out there in people's hands. I just did an upgrade, and I didn't venture into the latest new territory. I don't want to spend my time on tweaking and headaches. I guess it depends on what you're willing to deal with.

Not to derail the thread, but yeah eBay is a minefield. Every time I post something there, I cross my fingers I have a good experience.

They are already "out there" in people's hands, in droves......Ryzen 3000 and X570 didn't launch yesterday. The current state of both is no secret at all, at this point. Ryzen is not a enigmatic bomb, and motherboard DOA rates or CPU binning probabilities aren't any different from any other platform.

@puma99dk| I'd say wait for the 3950X at the very latest, don't dither any more than that. If you don't build mini-ITX, the PCH fan should not be an issue at all. 1.0.0.3ABBA is just around the corner, and should bring much needed improvements to the boosting algorithm. Details are so sparse and rumors so varied on B550 that it wouldn't even be on my radar if I was buying at this point in time.

Pick a board with strong power delivery to support that 3900X or 3950X. The ITX contenders are outstanding in this regard, the mATX ones not so much.

It really depends on how you really want Zen 2, specifically. Do you feel like such an upgrade would be wholly justified, or do you consider it worthwhile to wait for process improvements to eliminate Zen 2's flaws and (possibly) the need for active cooling in 600-series chipsets? Those are questions that are ultimately up to you to decide.

But from the perspective of what you have, there is absolutely no need to upgrade, unless you desperately need those threads. Push that 8086K sucker to its limits.

I was referring to waiting on the 550. The 570 should be becoming a known commodity.

@tabascosauz the X570 offers things I don't need and really care about. I know the NVME speeds are insane but not worth to spend about double the money on since I am perfectly happy with my 970 EVO 500GB.

MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC costs about £144/180USD it offers bios flashback so ready to update the bios for Ryzen 3000 cpus and I am not good overclock so the vrm cooling should handle a 3900/3950X without issues.

MSI X570 Gaming Pro Carbon WIFI costs about £261/327USD which is about double up +/-.

The 8086K is very good chip. I'm one of the few who think that 6C/12T is better than 8C/8T.

I'm also one of few who think that Ryzen 3000 chips will reach boost and beyond a few months/a year after release as the process matures. Same thing happened with 1st gen and 2nd gen Ryzen. While launch models could barely reach 4.1 and 4.2 GHz, later models were reported (taken with a bit of salt) to easily reach 4.3 GHz.

I'll suggest what I suggested to a friend of mine who didn't need Zen (heh!) but was curious. Buy it during Christmas or after B550 boards release. Mature process, stable bios, holiday sales. What's the rush?

I'm already reaching boost and beyond...
I guess this might be the small advantage of the 3800X vs the 3700X though.
What you're saying isn't entirely true though, as my chip has always boosted to a minimum of 4,400MHz, but now, at least two cores boosts all the way to 4,600MHz.

Keep what you have and wait another generation. If you can't tell a difference between the systems in a blind A/B test theres no point in upgrading.

It's not about performance if you can't read because gaming will give me jack but heavier applications like converting runs faster with more cores because they are multi-threaded workloads.

But it's more or less because I am really curious for trying AMD Zen 2 myself as I wrote to begin but it's still an arguement that splits me because I think it might satisfy my curiosity in the long term because it's like I need something new and want to try something new and not gonna go RTX anyway it's eye candy yes do I need it? No my GTX 1080 Ti FE Hybrid does the job fine for 1440p with my monitor.

Theres no reason to accuse me of not reading, I am voicing my opinion as the purpose of your thread appears to be to collect opinions. I am trying to save you money but if you want the system then just buy it. You won't get any further argument from me.

Maybe wait and see what comes of the no boost debarcle though, i half wish id waited , but I won't have the money later i think.
A second phase of chips including the 3950x and more availability will help nudge prices down too.

Personally, I wouldn't bother it seriously depends on what you do with the 8086K...

If you do any work in Blender the Ryzen 3000 series is still the way to go even after the new 2.80 release. Going from 2.79 - 2.80 is equivalent to a CPU upgrade with the performance uplift. Sorry for leaving my reply without getting to the point. A free performance uplift can be had with a bit of optimzation of the software, and everyone wins whether they have Intel or AMD.

the only game I been having fun with is Spyro Reignited Trilogy
I have that on my Steam wish list. Wasn't sure if I should get it on release or wait for reviews.
