Custom audio tracks in games? As a general option?

Just kinda hit me...

I'm not one that generally listens to too much music when I'm seriously gaming.
However there are a lot that do.

Would you like it or take advantage of it if games had simple options of customizing sound effects, much more like customizing your windows sounds where you could select any audio clip you had?

I know previously there have been a number of games you can do this too, some with ease, some with a fair bit of work, then some that afak cannot be really done without some level of programming knowledge or a technical guide which to be honest most wont due simply do to the complexity.

Of course. in games like Fallout New Vegas I'm more immersed in the game when my own music is on the radio.

Benchmark Scores Faster than the tortoise; slower than the hare.
Even games that have custom music support (like The Sims 3 and GTA), I find I just mute the in-game music and play my own in the background. It's hassle free and works in every game without exception.

I think those simple options would be a good idea. Some games, like all versions of Unreal Tournament, gain a lot of atmosphere with their background music, so being able to customize it is a big boost. UT lets you customize it by the way.

Are you talking about replacing sound files like gunshots, etc? Or music?

Changing sounds in games would be interesting, but in the case of a competitive game like BF, CoD or CSS it could be bad.

I'm in favor of having custom music in-game as an option, but sound effects shouldn't be messed with (except maybe for a mod or so).

i just disable the in game music in every single game, and if its a singleplayer game i run winamp in the background and control it via media keys on my keyboard.

in an MP game, music is a bad thing. gets in the way of listening to the game, and to hearing others on voice chat.

cutscene comes along, bam, track stops. it doesnt even resume or play the same song after the cutscene, its just some random new one. same goes for combat - morrowind for example was great... enemy at max distance causes music to change to combat, then they'd lose track of you a split second later and you'd end up with this spastic loop of never ending music changes.

I can see your point but I'm not annoyed by that. Also you loose some of the expecience imo. Take Max Payne, thay game uses music to set moods for scenes. I guess if you play it for the action you might not care, but I never do.

What's the point? :confused: All great games have great soundtracks which create amazing atmosphere. If game has retarded soundtrack then game itself is retarded in the first place.

It depends on the game really. Tactical online fps games are usually played without music so you can hear opponents (but i prefer to change weapon models and sounds in CS:S), in games like UT, all it matters is adrenaline rush so the more boom boom music is the better. In racing games, if they have awesome music (like NFS3, NFS4 and NFS5) i like to listen to music where in NFS Hot Pursuit 2010 i just prefer to listen to the engine noise and tire squealing.

I just turn ingame music down, leave all the sound effects and other sounds on high then load up my own music in VLC player.

thats how ive always done it
