Hey,
Some of you may have heard that the original Darth Flatulence has tanked, and I had to replace a lot of stuff. Current specs of Darth Flatulence:
CPU- P4 631 Cedar Mill core (3.0 GHz)
RAM- 1GB Corsair ValueRAM
HDD- 80GB
VGA- GeForce 6200
CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive
Now, recently, Darth Flatulence has been giving me shit (no pun intended). I've traced it to the OS never getting properly repaired/installed (hooray for XP repair...it's a great band-aid, but not much else). And so, here are my options, and the advantages of each.
Format the drive and install Windows XP Home SP2 again.
Pros-
-I'm used to it, and it works with everything I've got
-It's simple
-I already own a copy
Cons-
-MS is really starting to get annoyed with all the activation calls I've been doing
-Reinstalling from an upgrade disk is REALLY annoying
-XP Home is really starting to show it's age
-Doing this would keep a bunch of features that we're looking for in Vista off the computer, such as parental controls, photo album....etc.
Format the drive, buy and install Windows Vista
Pros-
-Windows Vista is EXTREMELY easy to use
-Windows Vista has parental controls (big for a family PC)
-Everything in that PC is "Windows Vista certified" short of the things that don't matter, like the DVD reader.
Cons-
-It's $110 new, and I'm not pirating it.
-From what I've heard, it's a bit of a gamble, really. This is a relatively new OS, so I can expect a little bit of trouble.
Format the drive, download, burn, and install *nix
Pros-
-*nix is nice, clean, and has everything we need
-*nix is free!
Cons-
-Network sharing will kiss my ass, with or without Samba
-HP printer + *nix =
-Configuration is no small feat
-No parental controls by default, but I might be able to compile some in.
So, I have to ask....what do you think I should do?
