I have a Linksys WRT54GL V1.1 and I'm trying to flash it to the DD-WRT fireware. I looked online but there are so many guides and all of them are different. Can someone enlighten me with the correct guide and firmware?

OK Step by step guide:

  1. Download the Mini-Build here. Saving it to your desktop naming it "DD-WRT Micro".
  2. Download the standard built here. Saving it to your desktop naming it "DD-WRT Standard".
  3. Connect to the router directly with a cable if you haven't already, do not do anything after this step over wireless.
  4. Do a hard reset on the router by pressing the reset button on the router while the router is still plugged in and powered on and holding it for 30 seconds until all the lights on the face of the router go off and come back on.
  5. Open up the Linksys User Interface in your browser.
  6. Go to "Administration".
  7. Go to "Update Firmware".
  8. Click the "browse" button.
  9. Select the DD-WRT Micro file you saved to your desktop earlier.
  10. Click "Ok".
  11. Wait for the firmware to flash, it should only take about 60 seconds.
  12. Reset the router again using the reset button.
  13. Open up the DD-WRT User Interface in your browser using the same method as openning the Linksys User Interface.
  14. Again go to "Administration" then "Update Firmware".
  15. Click the "Browse" button again.
  16. This time select the DD-WRT Standard file you saved to your desktop earlier.
  17. Click "Ok".
  18. Wait again for the firmware to flash, it should only take about 60 seconds.
  19. Reset the router again using the reset button.
  20. Enjoy your new DD-WRT firmware.

I take no responsibility if you kill your router. At any point in these instructions, especially while you are actually flashing the router, something could go wrong and brick the router making it totally useless.

This version won't brick my router right?

Nope, that version is the one DD-WRT recommends for the WRT54GL. However, as I said, that doesn't mean something won't go wrong and brick the router anyways.

Hmm how did you happen to do that? I just flashed my wrt54g for my first time yesterday and let me tell you that it's the best choice I've EVER done! It's amazing, no more dropping signal, you have way more security options, you can change the TX voltage for a little extra boost in signal.

I just don't get how you managed to brick it. Try doing the 30,30,30 reset maybe?

The firmware upgrade failed halfway and after I reset the router, it wouldn't give me any connection or access to 192.168.1.1.
