Dead fan or dead mobo?

So I have a HP 4520S which fan is not starting up and eventually shutting down due to overheating. Checked with speedfan, temperatures are being read, shuts down at about 100C. Took the PC apart and saw the fan starting up, slowing down every 1-2 seconds. There was a brief moment the fan went full tilt, but it lasted like 10s.

So, mobo or the fan might be the culprit?

Get a PSU Tester to test your power supply. You can also connect the fan directly to the power supply. If the fan is working, it should spin up to full speed.

100°C is way too hot.

Is the interior clean of heat trapping dust?

Replace the fan first, check fan control settings in the bios.

If still acts up check psu and last but not least replace the mobo

@Bill_Bright The chassis is clean, cleaned it myself a while back, new thermal compound and everything, worked like a charm.

Have checked the fan control in the bios - there is none. Booted in the bios to check if software was causing the issue and nope, fan still starting/stopping. New mobo is out of the question, the laptop is 6 years old.. If something expensive is broken - I want to just trash it.

How could it be a PSU issue? Everything else is working fine, for about 10 minutes till it shuts down. I imagine the fan is 5V, if the 5V aren't being delivered then something else should act up as well, no?

Will try to hoop up the fan directly.

If the case a fan is dead, I imagine it just wont spin at all?

You never said before that everything worked fine for 10 minutes. That does suggest (but not prove) the PSU is fine.

If "dead", that is true, but it is common too for fan bearings to wear and partially seize, then free up and seize again as the fan and bearing lubricant heats up and cools down.

Having said that, I was negligent in looking to see what a HP 4520S is and instead went on you stating it was a "PC". While it is true a notebook is a personal computer, generally a PC refers to a desktop/tower computer, not a notebook. Hence my suggestion for that PC power supply tester. Sorry.

My wife's old HP laptop fan wore out a few years ago. As soon as the fan failed the laptop won't boot up anymore. I swapped in a good fan and repaste everything, then it powered on just fine. I say in your case it is probably the fan. HP uses some pretty cheap fans in their laptop

Probooks generally seem to last a while longer.

But yeah the fan's dead, or something's dead on the motherboard, but that is not likely unless you took it apart and shorted something.

OP please be careful disassembly the laptop. Those tiny tiny screws once lost you would never be able to find them. Get a good guide to help you dissemble the laptop.

Don't worry, I've been taking stuff apart for years. But I do usually lose one screw..

Think I'm going to buy a replacement fan and check, if that doesn't fix it I'll be glad to scrap this computer, thanks.
