Dead HD 6970?

So I bought two used HD 6970 with full cover-blocks from a guy here in Sweden, figured it would be a nice and most of all cheap upgrade to my HD 5870.

Now to the problem. One of the cards works like a charm, the other doesn't. So I thought I would turn to you guys for help.

Steps I have tried so far:

Using both cards to see if it would work in crossfire, using only the faulty card, tried different slots, different psu, different pcie-version on the slot.

Tried connecting the fan, it spins up just fine and tried to start without having the power connected, which gives a red light on the card. Those are the only two signs of life I have seen so far from it.

I'm completely out of ideas here so... anyone else have any bright ideas? :)

So the fan starts but you have no video on one card? If it doesn't work in another computer then the card is most probable dead.

Is it equipped with a BIOS switch? If so, try the other BIOS.

Afraid not, it is rev 2. The card that works is a rev 1 and has the BIOS switch, typical...

Could try re-flashing it since you have 2 cards and the working one has a switch which would help in-case of a miss-flash to card 1. Shot in the dark but it is an option that is not too time consuming.

Get in touch with the manufacture of thee card to see what they say about thee red LED which normally is a bad thing..

Other wise send them back tot he guy.

He said it gives out three LED when he doesn't connect the additional power to the card, so pretty sure it means "connect the additional power" :)

That is my conclusion too :)

anyway, just noticed the card isn't even detected in BIOS (the pcie slot is listed as empty) and atiflash -i doesn't list it either (didn't think it would after not being seen in BIOS) so think it's pretty dead :ohwell:

Yep, if it's not even being detected in BIOS, it's either a bad PCIE slot(which you've ruled out) or a dead card.
Call up the guy you bought them from and beat him over the head with the dead card until he gives you the cash back. That full-cover block should give the card some good weight, maybe that bastard will get a concussion.
And if you think I'm being harsh... well, never sell dead hardware without specifically disclosing that it's dead. It's just unethical.

yes of course lol, Sorry miss read it. And yes the red led will be because of the disconnected power leads. When they are connected they normally flash on for a very short time on start up.

Any chance you have a friend who can test it in there system ?..

You own a Kill A Watt by any chance ?.. Although going by it not showing in thee bios may meean it's just dead or the pci-e is not making good contact.

there is still a chance that it WAS alive right before it was sold, it could be killed during handling, maybe some pressure was applied at an unpleasant spot (gpu/vram/etc)

i accidentally killed my x800 a few months ago this way, i may have even contributed to the death of my 4870x2's vram, both of them bsod when the driver loads (& the 4870x2 now has artifacts before windows)

OP, you could try the oven method if you're stuck with the 'dead' card

Agreed, I was a bit mad when the card didn't work and my mood didn't exactly improve after everything I tried failed to get some kind of life from the card.

Anyway, I still believe it may be as kn00tch says, that it was working when he tried it last.

I contacted the seller last night and we are working out a deal, he is trying to find another rev 2 card for me so I can still use the full-cover block.
