Defragmentation question.

So I just downloaded piriform's newest program, defraggler. I checked both Vista's and Defraggler's analysis of my hard drive. Vista said that no further defragmentation was needed. However, defraggler came up with 43 fragmented files and 1,624 fragments. Is vista's tool epic fail? or is defraggler messing with vista's "optimizations []"?

Vista's defragger is only doing the files thats heavy fragmentet, while most 'real' defraggers takes everything. Thats why its reporting more stuff than vista's own

Not to sure about that program keep meaning to try it out. But most defragers cannot move all files due to being in use by the OS which is another reason i like having daul OS's on my system. Try sutting down some programs your not using see if that helps. Some files are all so locked so they cannot be moved too done to protect the OS..

try out Ultimate Defrag see if you have any luck with it.. Link below. With Ultimate Defrag and movable files you can click the file to defrag it too even with the free version.

Thanks guys. Ill be sure to check out that app. Looks promising. Saw the pics and was like...um...amazing. Always wondered when they were gonna put an actual "image" of the hard disk and where the data was located. much thanks asrock.

defraggler is great.

Also try looking at Ultimate defrag. It's free: http://www.disktrix.com/UDFree.htm

It's got loads of options. Work with archive options and folder options. I use this on my laptop that carries a large email box. You will need to read the help file to know how to use the options properly.

Vista's defrag utility does not show fragments larger than 64 MB in size...it considers them 'unfragmented'..and this is the default setting. I think that typing defrag c: -a -v at the command prompt is the way to get a complete defrag analysis. EDIT: Probably defraggler is showing all the fragmented files hence the discrepancy.

IMHO pick one defragger, whether it is Vista's own or XYZ, and stick with it. Running multiple defraggers will result in one utility possibly trying to undo another's optimizations and rearrange stuff according to it's own algorithms. FWIW, I use just Diskeeper 2k9 Pro on my machines...the windows defraggers are never run, and DK does a perfectly fine job without any other defragger interfering with it. So, one good utility is all you need.

Piriform stuff is great and free. Use them all, obviously CCleaner the longest and often. Followed by Defraggler and then comes Recuva for those accidental deletes. I always delete everything with shift and sometimes remove torrent slips to remove torrent+data

I use Auslogics Disk Defrag. I've used defraggler and it wasn't that bad.
