Dell's Alienware team has today launched an updated version of the Aurora gaming desktop which is based on Intel's Sandy Bridge-E platform. Known as model R4, the upgraded Aurora makes use of a head-turning ALX mid-tower chassis, and features a liquid-cooled Core i7-3930K or i7-3960X processor, up to 32 GB of RAM, up to a 2 TB hard drive and/or up to a 512 GB solid state drive, and up to an Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 card or two AMD Radeon HD 6950s.

Dell's desktop can also be equipped with one or two optical drives, a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio or Titanium audio card, and runs Windows 7. The Alienware Aurora R4 starts at $2,199 and can be found here.

The case looks like a custom job from Silverstone - It has the face of a RV01 and the body of an RV02 or RV03.

Is it just me, or is that a mATX case/motherboard?

Oh sweet mother what a SCAM!

They're charging $150 to overclock the 3930K from 3.9 to 4.1GHz and the same for overclocking the 3960X from 4GHz to 4.2GHz...
You must be a pretty stupid person to pay that premium and it should nigh on be illegal for Dell to charge that much extra for overclocking the CPU a bit extra

Sadly, some people have more dollars than sense. Pretty much any configuration upgrades from Dell are a rip, esp. on the server side. I can buy 8GB of server RAM for the price they want to "upgrade" from like 2 --> 4GB. But, it's their money, if they want to blow it on things like this, oh well.

Meh! I'm shipping out 3930s @ 4.75GHz, what are they playing at offering 4.2GHz max, what a waste.

Ugly ass case. Shitty GTX590. Overpriced (build one yourself and you save hundreds of dollars). Just the right PC for asperger kids.

The 590 pwns what you have, the case is better than yours, and please, NEVER make fun or an example of autistic children. It's not gonna make you look cooler.

You aren't imagining things; that is a microATX motherboard & case. Install two dual-slot video cards, and all your slots are full. :shadedshu

what a disappointing system. alienware is supposed to be top notch, but that's just a small cheesy case with a steel frame, not even aluminium or something special, no room for proper cooling etc. even the plastic cover for these red leds look cheap. come on dell, you guys can do better...

Yeah, the GTX590 pwns my card AT BLOWING UP. Ever tried to increase the voltage of a GTX590? KABOOM. Shitty power phase of 2xGTX470, overheating & stupid nonse card.

That no-airflow-alienwareshit has nothing on Define R3.

The 590 uses a 5 phase desing of GF110, it doesn't have anything to do with 470. 470's are solid cards that don't blow up like 590's. But yeah, I agree on 580 against 590.

Though, you're overexaggerating. Yes, it's overpriced. Yes, it comes with not-so-good components. Still, the case has a front to back airflow chamber. You don't need a load of fans for good airflow. Also, it looks good and they're using dual-PCB Delta/Etasis server units, which are of highest quality. So the system as a whole isn't awful.

- Steel is better than aluminium is reliabile and solid. I hate minimalistic design such LIAN LI !

- Proper cooling is not always a lot of 120mm fans on each side of the case

- I do not think you've ever seen one of these case live.

I was at an exhibition of DELL in Italy i guarantee you that are designed to perfection and are mounted in a very solid and reliable.

Cooler Master, Lian Li, Antec ecc... in comparison of Alienware they are like homeless people.

I quite like aluminium cases, their lighter and easier to mod then steel.

Ugh if I was going to drop that much to have a company build me a pc, Dell would be far from the top of my list. The over-the-top plastic exterior of this case is pretty horrible to look at. And really, a MATX board with 4 ram slots. For how big that case looks there seems to be very little room for the hardware that is jammed into it.

I have to ask... for 2200 US couldn't they have a case that:
1. is painted black inside so that the case doesn't feel cheap and 90s? (instead of trying to cover the cheap-looking grey metallic parts with black plastic sheets?)
2. is equipped with a black power supply so that you don't have to see its ugly metallic grey posterior in the back of the black case?
3. is equipped with a black backplate instead of cheap looking ugly metallic grey back plate? (so that you don't have to see its ugly metallic grey posterior in the back of the black case)

Oh Dell........
