Just got POS laptop given to me. Dell Latitude cpx w/ 650 mhz processor and 75 gb hd.

The computer is pretty slow with windows 2000 that only has SP2 updates. i cannot update through windows online because the certificate has expired.

Thinking about upgrading to windows xp but not sure if it will run correctly.

Do you think should just get updates for windows 2000 or upgrade completely to windows xp? Thanks in advance.

For XP 512MB of RAM is going to be the biggest bottleneck. If it has less than 512 (which I assume it does) XP would not be a good idea. XP says 256 is the minimum but it's not reliable considering the the CORE XP OS stuff takes about 128MB of RAM.

If it has less than 512MB RAM stick with 2000. If it has 512 or more, XP would work.

Ok

RAM is clocked at 256MB in setup screen.

Hey is the screen that shows all the system setup stuff called bios or is bios something different?

Alright! Windows 2000 fully updated with SP4 will work fine then right?

W2K should run fine on it, and with 256 MB of RAM I wouldn't try running any other OS on it, unless you wanted to try running nLite on XP. nLite would also make 2000 faster as well, if you wanted to try it.

XP will run fine on that computer. I've run it on far less.
Yes, it will be slow, but it will work just fine. I've had XP running on 266Mhz desktops with 128MB of RAM, 16MB video cards and 20GB hard drives.
You will not be able to do much other than surfing, checking e-mail or running basic office applications (without losing you mind), but it will work.
