I can mount a pc today with just a litle help of my brother, almost none of my friends can mount a computer and some ask me to choose parts, mounting and repairing, i think modular is a good option if works well, if not like, i said before kill the guy, the graphics modules for example could be done by ATI, and not modified by Dell, the only problem i see it's cooling, but it could be good

pretty much. the pcb designs would be made and manufactured by dell just like verything else. the only things dell does is ask retail companies aka intel ati asus ect how to design it so it will run right

Yeah it is good. Anyone who takes the time to learn how PCs work gets some pretty good rewards, one of which saving about $ 300-500 on your system.

That person and whoever designed the current gen XPS

YES lol, exactly. I had the chance to buy either an M1710 (red) with all the new hardware or the M170 with all the old hardware, and I'm a big looks guy, so I decided to go M170. That's pretty extreme for most people, trading a 25% performance increase for looks, but hey, if it's ugly, it's ugly. I wasn't that extreme, getting the 25% increase would have cost a lot more than the M170 but still.

But guys, you gotta realize, we all are into computers, most people aren't, and because they aren't for some reason they seem like the most ignorant people on earth. They really cannot upgrade hardware, let alone want to. I've upgraded parts in like 3 of my friend's PC's for money. If all people were like us, there would be no Geek Squad.

I mean I'm into cars, and even DRIVING cars, and seeing a guy that isn't into cars try to talk about them is just like "uhh dude, are you literally retarded or.....", and ESPECIALLY driving cars. Out here in Colorado I'm not joking, no less than 99.99999% of people out here are horrible drivers. The only reason it's not 100% is cause I know myself and 2 other people that can drive well. Turn signals I'm pretty sure, people don't even know what they are anymore. And if they see one on they'll floor it to not let the guy in. Acceleration, I think people must have Coloradan-custom-installed pedals for "go" and "idle", like 2 switches. Most people hit "idle" out of a green light or anywhere from a stop, and when they hit "go" it's just to block you from getting into a lane, never to pass someone. I see Ferrari 360's out here, Corvette's everywhere, "Chevy" muscle cars cause although it's a hippie state, they still like the crappiest of all muscle companies (I'm a Ford guy), and they probably accelerate even SLOWER than normal cars. And neck-and-necking in lanes, well there's really no other way to drive I think, like these people have to have spotters everywhere they go. Oh and the most annoying part, not involving driving, is the asses with nice cars and tinted windows so they can't see anyone acknowledge their cars. No one has any manners, sociality, or personality on the road or even in person, so no one's kind enough to say "thanks" or "nice car" or wave their hands.

I'm not even gonna go into the rest, but as you can see, I know any of you guys including myself could make a list just as big about how stupid computer ignorant people are, so they really need this kind of computer. Just like I think the idea of "auto-drive" highways, with the magnets in them and the fully-automated vehicles, is a good idea. Even though I personally would be pissed off if it ever happened, the majority of people it would help (JUST like if I saw this piece Dell in real life) so it's kind of a good thing

Well I think it's a good idea...the thing looks AWESOME. And for regular consumers, that really does help upgrades. Then again, WD and Lite-On and all the PC companies have to make parts for Dell's new computers lol. I mean, it's like building a PC...made alot easier. Too bad the motherboard still sucks :p.
I have to agree with Zek, thats a pretty cool looking comp.

And since I rebuild mine weekly that would make it a LOT easier, lol

Hmm, I guess I'll add some of my own comments on this.

1) To prevent certain ones from being taken out while it is running, they should be locked into place when the computer is powered up. For drives, they could maybe be unlocked after using a command in the OS to eject the media or the command used before you unplug a drive.

2) There should be a way to lock all of the cartridges into it such that children couldn't remove them and put something messier in its place. -- Probably just a key or something.

3) To help with ventilation, the sides of the cartridges should open up when you power on the computer to make it so it is all one channel rather than a bunch of individual compartments. Types that need no ventilation and wouldn't be blocking air could be set to stay shut.

4) There should be a way of changing the parts that are in the cartridges so that customers can put in their own components into them if they know what they're doing.

If all of these conditions were met, I'm sure there would be more people who might consider buying such a system. Besides that it looks kind of weird , the things I've mentioned probably would address just about any other issue anyone here has mentioned.
