Desktop Factory's 125ci 3D printer (also known as a rapid prototyper) is now available for pre-order. The 125ci can build models of up to 5x5x5 inches and material for the printer is expected to cost around $1 per cubic inch. The retail price is $4,995 and anyone who wishes to pre-order must make a $495 deposit.

Software Windows Server 2003 R2 as a Workstation now migrated to W10 with regrets.
A medium sized model approx 5x5x5 inches would cost you $5x5x5xcost per cubic inch=$300-$600 in materials alone. I can imagine a designer using it to "mock up" a retail product. (imagine an apple designer doing the next ipod etc). But THIS AINT FOR THE KIDS!

I dont know what kind of math youre using there but...

A cubic inch is 1x1x1, so a 5x5x5 inch 'printout' would be $125

I dont think it could make a 125 cubic inch cube anyways.

I forgot math as well, it seems. 5x5x5=125 cu. inches, = $125.

But if my memory serves me well, one of the intentions of this product is to be able to create replacement parts for things like your barbie-doll or cell phone's shell. my phone is approx. 4.5x3x0.3125 (it's really slim). This shell would be hollow keep in mind (which might factor in as well), but the cost of that would be $4.22 (not $21.09 as my bad math made me think originally), which is significantly less than buying one at the store.

But as the prototype is made of a fairly sturdy plastic... it still won't have the proper finish, may not have the proper characteristics for actual use, may wear very differently, etc.

It's cool, but I wouldn't go saying it can make replacement parts for everything because you'd first have to model the components percisely in a CAD program, and they would still be a different color/material from basically anything you would replace.



It's still cool though, good for inventors and small time production and things i would imagine.

This price is really good actually for the 3D printer considering only a year or 2 ago 3-D printers were over $10,000 and were much less efficient with reusing their materials.

My old High School DDT teacher just got one right after we had graduated from High School surprisingly, and I got to see it in action and I have to say while he did get a good model and such at a good cost i dont see how this stuff costs that much but hey thats not really the point ive seen it in action and its really slow. I have so far seen my teacher test it out making a finger and a miniature cell phone. This is a really cool piece of technology but I still think it has a ways to go;););).

BTW he said material costs for his material wasn't that much and i asked if I could actually get the 3D printer to print out the parts for my rocket drawing its so cool to see it in your hands rather than on a CAD screen i gotta say:cool::cool::cool:

Prototypes are not realy made to last long or function for anything more than an example of function or a template for making molds to produce production parts.

I've always wanted one of these thngs, that price is getting reasonable, but still too pricy.

it creates a type of molding of a Three Dimensional part like a teacup for example or a model of a wrench for example the list goes on and on
