Not much of a "desktop remote control". Just power off/on and reset.

My experience with SilverStone add-on cards is positive.

I thought that too, but combined with a wireless keyboard/ touchpad or mouse, it means he won't have to roll off the couch to play with the computer.
Of course if he had a laptop he wouldn't need any of that.

Read the reviews. All that thing does is turn it on and off with a reset feature.

If your goal is to turn your computer off or on, then sure. But as others pointed out, you'll need more periphreals to actually control your computer.

I've never used the device personally, though, so YMMV. You may be able to find a cheaper version on AliExpress or similar.

There might be other options to consider as well, FWIW. I haven't looked into it, but I have a HTPC that I control with a Logitech Harmony remote. The remote is configured with software and can handle multiple devices, has preset configurations for most devices, and is customizable. I use it to control my HTPC, receiver, and TV. Just one option to consider, depending on what you're after

You could set the PC to wake with mouse or Keyboard through the Bios settings.
Personally I used a Windows Media remote when I had my PC hooked up in the loungeroom to the TV, but that needs an IR blaster and connection on the motherboard.

Agreed, and have it power down automatically via Windows power management. I'm trying to come up with reasons for something like this to exist. If you need to power on/wake up your computer you're planning to use it, and if that's the case you'll need a mouse/keyboard which will wake it up anyway. Seems like a waste of money.
