This is probably just dumb but, I have a 32Gb thumb drive. I downloaded windows 10 on it and used that to program this very computer. Now I want to put a copy of windows 10 on a different machine. I know I will need a new authentication key, that's not much of an issue.
But here is the stupid part. The stupid thing doesn't work. I can get a new thumb drive if I have to but I would much rather just delete the info that's on this thumb drive and re download it if I have to. It says write protected... I have found a handful of tutorials on how to unlock these stupid things. Regedit and diskpart don't do it. Diskpart doesn't even show it as read only. There is no physical lock.
So is there a fool proof way to unlock these dumb things? Or does putting win 10 on it screw them forever somehow?
If win 10 screws them forever somehow, shouldn't I still be able to use it to upload 10 on a different machine?
TIA!
Edit: DWORD value reads 0x0000001 (1) but IDK how to physically change the value. Clicking on the numeric string doesn't do anything. Clicking on the word DWORD lets me bring up something, but it sure doesn't look like what the tutorials show.

I had this problem, and used HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. The only one that easily worked for me. (it also works when you use an USB thumb drive on a SONY TV to record TV programs/shows, and it becomes hard to format on a pc afterwards)

It's an old program from HP.

I can upload it if you can't find it online.

Beware of the BS websites posting virus, and such. The program file is HPUSBFW.EXE

If it's anything other than that, be careful, and use an antivirus on it or upload it to test on https://www.virustotal.com/gui/

Here is mine that I just checked on VirusTotal: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file...71e19ff90c9dfd63f6e6d864a98b4bf381e/detection

Again, if you need it, I can provide it.

So what you are saying is the auto run isn't working and it won't even start the install process.
Have you checked the Bios of the computer you are trying to install to?
Set boot order and priority?
Test the USB on your current system as it worked initially on that, if it works there there is no reason it won't work on another.

Yes, yes, and yes. Won't work on my current system either. It did before. Is this supposed to be a single use deal?

Hi,
Typically it would be a bios setting that might prevent install from usb flash drive
Really depends how the usb was created with win-10
Have you use media creation tool onto the usb ?

What format is the usb fat32 or ntfs and what is the format of the os ssd/ hdd drive mbr or gpt ?

Bios secure boot disabled/ fast boot too
Depending on above format whether uefi only boot is good or not I don't know maybe CSM enabled or not.

The question is: How do I turn off write protection.
Thanks.

Hi,
Look on it and see if it has a little switch like sd cards are known to have
Personally never seen a flash drive have one or write protection for that matter
But then again you've said little to nothing on how the usb was created either, just vanilla term "programed" :/

I used the microsoft media creation tool. I have tried to overwrite it. Nothing is working. Guessing Microsoft decided to encrypt 31.75Gb of 32 Gb for an 8Gb download.

How?

You didn't break it but it's a real pain to fix. If I remember correctly this will fix it Low Level Formatting Tool . It's been a while...

This tool definitely works, I just used it on another drive that was software write protected from using it as a W10 1903 installer disk.
