Did My PSU just crap out?

As i was migrating my system to NVMe SSD, i left it on to back up all of my files over the course of 12hrs. I had finally installed everything on new SSD and copying files back to computer the system just turned off. And from there it simply refused to stay on.

It will turn on briefly for ~1 second and then shut down immediately. If i leave it off for 10 mins it would stay on for a bit longer. If I unplug SATA devices it would also seem to hang on a bit longer.

Here is the video showing the symptoms. Talking about freaking bad luck. I thought EVGA has good PSUs.


System spec on the left in case you are wondering if I am overloading the PSU. Also this system is hooked up to APC UPS. So input from grid should be no problem.

i would disconnect your hdds so you dont damage them while trying to figure out what is wrong. my suggestion is to try another psu in the system.

Good suggestion. Removing all SSD and HDD.

nice find. i would start a request for an rma. evga is normally pretty good in regards to taking care of their customers.

Question is, can I still trust another EVGA PSU??

My now 10yrs old Antec still works like a champ. If it has the correct connectors I am totally hooking it up to my x99.

N=1, I rarely read of problems with EVGA PSUs, even the lower end ones are quite fine. Then again I completely understand switching brands when a PSU fails within warranty.

I had my CORSAIR HX850 die earlier this year, (low voltage on all rails) It took a long time to diagnose. (slow failure over 6 months...long story) (very tail end of 7 year warranty) For replacement, Corsair RMA replaced with AX860i.

In the meantime I replaced with spare SEASONIC (X series) 850w. (No issues.)

I have a EVGA G2 850w that has been solid. I would have no hesitation with another EVGA.

Youd be in the minority with that opinion. One of the highest rated yet cheapest tier 1a (g2/3 p2, etc) psus...

i hold no real brand allegiance, i simply buy whats MOST likely not to shit the bed. I have a great NZXT, a great EVGA G2, and i had a corsair shit the bed, so i ordered a seasonic ....what is priced right, and hold the "qualities" that make a Good PSU good, thats the "should i buy it " recipe

some of the higher end seasonic PSU's are priced well & with rebates on newegg right now.Oh & did switching yours to ECO mode fix the issue?? Because the guy in the thread you linked seem to allude to the fact that it did for him

I was given a thermaltake "tough power" 850W power supply for my nephews computer ,and before I built the PC ,obviously I tested the power supply by plugging it into a wall and verifying that it powered up which it did . but as soon as any load was applied it did almost exactly what is happening in the video in the OP

In my opinion I would say that and a sign of the quality of the EVGA power supply is that it failed and hopefully but as it seems now didn't damage anything else, which depending on the type of failure that occurs can happen

Quick update. I took the PSU off and tried to see through the vent what could be wrong. Didn't see anything wrong and didn't smell anything burnt. Out if frustration i shaked the PSU really hard. Afterwards I plugged it in for one last time hoping it would turn on. Welp this time it did turn on! So here I am scratching my head wondering what happened. I have always used the ECO mode ever since I built the PC. Now it seems it will only boot up on regular mode.

The PSU is about 2.5yrs old. And THANK GOODNESS I backed all important data to 2 separate external hard drive before the migration. No dmg to SSD or HDD so far it seems.


Maybe I should still RMA my PSU.

It tripped a security measure so it might just be that while there is nothing wrong with power delivery. Regardless, it still should be replaced or repaired.

One thing I did notice for the past several months is it would randomly not being able to power up 1 or 2 of my HDD during booting sequence. Small signs of the PSU going out of the door maybe?

The situation did get a lot worse after upgrading to 6950X, maybe the increased power draw accelerated the process.

FWIW if you look at replacements, this is one of the reasons I oversize my psus by about 20-30%. It pays off in longevity and mitigates risk of failure quite a bit.

I would replace that bitch regardless of whether it's running now or not. Based on the issues you've explained through this thread ,I think they're all signs of what will inevitably (sooner rather than later) make for a dead power supply. Just take the fact that it's running now as a gift and make sure everything is squared away as well as begin the RMA process.

I wonder if by you shaking it you rattled something inside that was maybe causing a short

It was sizsd appropriately and had nothing to do with its demise. Quality psus are made to run their output for the life of their warranty. Im not saying run it at 90%+ capacity, but people buy way oversized psus and spend too much money for reasons only found in their head.

For your rig, a 550w model is plenty including overclocking and headroom. 650w is a good compromise. 750w+ is overkill.

Wait a 550Watt is good for overclocked 10 core and a FuryX, plus a whole lot of hard drives and a VR headset? I have seen power draw near 700Watt reported by UPS under 100% CPU+GPU load.

And made a phone call to EVGA for cross shipping RMA. A replacement PSU is on the way.

The tech support did mention that there was quite a lot of RMA on this specific model when it was manufactured by super flower.

Nothing stopping you from doing this and selling the rma unit. Less downtime too.
