Digital Multimeter - shopping - any recommendations?

Hi,

Going shopping for a digital multimeter tomorrow so I can have some probing fun with my graphics card lol.

Might eventually want to do some basic mods as my confidence grows, but for now its only really core voltage I need to be able to test.

Any recommendations/specifications I should look out for?

Never owned one before so not really sure what I should be looking for.

Don't want to spend a lot of money, but also I want it to at least be "slightly" future proof so I can grow my knowledge on PCB's

I am an Auto mechanic and work with electricians regularly, Fluke is my go to. I am sure any good quality DMM will work though, just make sure you get the terminal back probe kit to go with it. Makes it easier to get into tight spots to check voltage.

I wanted something cheaper to start with; they all list the minimum reading of about 200mv (cheap ones).. but none of the specifications seem to list the decimal places/accuracy.

As long as it can read the difference between 800mv and 812mv for example I think that would do it

Get a fluke. Its will last 30 years and you will be surprised how often you use it. Its a great investment. They make a compact one for around $100

My next go to would be Craftsman

went for the cheapest £12.5 I could get lol (think that's $15 in dollars) haha

with a voltage of 1.093v in MSI AB meter reading is 1108

and its been enough for me to confirm that the new 1080 classified software voltage tool 'is' working properly

buy a cheap one off ebay.. for none everyday professional use it will do what you need doing.. by cheap i mean a tenner of so..

I got a fluke 117 but it doesn't do mAh it's for electicians... that's the problem w that company. They have a fuckton of models for each freakin veritcle but very very little feature overlap. Like srsly breh they got one for hvac, one for electrical, one for electronics, one for avionics, and they vary a good bit even within the same, essenial product.

Fluke is good, but expensive and totally overkill for normal users. Uni-T makes good stuff, and they are affordable.

At work we have a bunch of Fluke43Bs, and they spoil you.

There not cheap for a reason. I got frustrated with a open circuit about 20 years ago and threw my fluke against the wall hard. Its works fine but it has a dent in the corner. I think I paid $180 for it in 1990

But you cannot make a mobile device that fits it all, due to space limitations. Each measurement area has own protection/ADC/scaler and power limits, they can overlap few basic things but the core circuit must have parts of their own, thus making them bulky again. If the device tries to measure everything it sacrifices precision, space and quality. There are few stupid areas in our life where you cannot have it all... maybe I want a voltmeter that has a valve at their input thus an ultra high input resistance and not screwing the measurement values like in high voltage generators feeding some Geiger counters... those greedy ambitions.

Fluke is the best really. But for home domestic use? Take any of them...
