Disc at 100% ALWAYS

I am trying to fix my wife laptop, it is a Thinkpad W550s. For work she uses Outlook,Word, Excel, Lynch, one note open all the time. Even with some apps closed disc is always at 100%. what can I to fix this. What information do you guys need to help me out? here is 2 images of resource screen. one thing I found is process name is System and compressed memory is always at or around 97% see images 3 and 4

I would very much worry you have some kind of disk encrypting malware/ransomware firing up. Barring that, the HD could be failing, but I'd do a malware scan first. Just theories, don't panic just yet, but investigate for sure.

I'm not up to date on that as it's been ages since I had malware Windows Defender could not handle. Someone else will probably post some good ideas soon though.

Windows Defender (in control panel) would be a good place to start.

Download and install Malwarebytes Free for a starters. There is not a lot it won't find.

malwarebytes has theyre free scan, but it also offers some pretty decent tools in the paid version, and some in the free i think too. MBArootkit is free i believe.

my nephew runs a Dell optiplex, and His old C drive had an issue similar to what your describing. His was also making tons of noise, so i replaced the drive, and the Ridiculously high HDD usage dropped. I dont know if it was because the drive was failing, or what, but i used seagate disc wizard to make a Clone of the "problem" HDD, and just cloned it onto a new Seagate barracuda, and the issue was resolved. I wonder if maybe Your wifes laptop drive is having a similar issue.

i would boot into safe mode, with all system srvcs disabled, and see if it is still running 100%. also, run msconfig, and see what exactly is running @ startup

Here's an article with a MS link. They talk about Windows 10, but perhaps it's also a problem in Win 7? They mention an issue with Onedrive.

I had an issue with my work computer where the OS install from the factory had the virtual memory size statically set to 4GB. As soon as I came close to that limit, it would grind away trying to compress the pagefile. I'd double check that your virtual memory is set to auto.

Edit: I had the same "System and compressed memory" process grinding away too.

so i checked virtual memory and it is just like image you posted. also I am running the malwarebytes now. I also closed all apps and disc is still at 100%
just finished running malwarebytes, but this is the free version which does not scan for malware. it says I need to buy full version for malware scsan.

No, this is not the case. The free version merely does not have a resident scanner. It's on-demand scan is fully functional and highly regarded.

I'd say check S.M.A.R.T. status. I recommend the program that Frick linked, CrystalDiskInfo.

Try going to performance options: advanced.
Uncheck automatic manage paging file.
Select the C drive and select "custom size".
Enter initial size as 16384, max as 32768.
Click "set" then OK.
Click "apply" and OK.
Reboot.

Some disks run at 100% all the time

Leave the page file alone. If you want to defrag it just delete it and then set it back on.

ok I will try the SMART status with crystaldiscinfo today. there is not a whole lot on HD, it for work only so no games or anything like that. I think it is a 550 gig Hd i will check in little bit. Should I also do what rhino said about "performance options: managing page file

It's faster to format than to attempt to troubleshoot retarded windows in situations like this. Corporations don't spend 2 secs checking a machine. It's just reimaged (granted they're using roaming profiles...but it's still a waste of time to diagnose anything).

You should always just reinstall fresh when getting anything from an OEM (especially with them shipping trojans AND lying about stopping).

Yes the Malwarebytes is free and comes with 30 day trial version aswell , only difference is that the full version has the Real Time protection , means it scan all files you access
It will scan and disinfect malware the exact same as the full version

Scan Pc with free version of malwarebytes, make sure up to date - disinfect if problems found
Download Kaspersky Antivirus trial for 30 days, update- Scan Pc
Could also run Rkill - if there is a rootkit virus
Reboot after scans

Use "process Explorer" to find the program using the Hdd if still at 100% usage

Most the free antivirus as pretty useless - Avg, Avast . Would rather download Kaspersky ,Bitdefender trial version just for a scan

Don't disable superfetch, that's not the problem, you'll just make system even slower.

And observe writes to disk (formerly FileMon) and check what program or process is doing it. Something is invoking the reads and writes, you have to discover which one it is.
