Is it my imagination, or does the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update consume an additional 20-30GB of disk space over the previous Creators Update release? Unfortunately, I didn't log my disk usage before the upgrade, but now my C: drive has 56GB of stuff, and I know it wasn't anywhere near that full before. I've run "Disk Cleanup -> Clean up system files" and selected everything on the list, including remove previous version of Windows. I also emptied my Recycle Bin, my Temp folder, \Windows\Temp folder, and \Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder. Finally, I ran Wise Disk Cleaner to delete assorted application garbage.

Has anyone else noticed the bloat in Fall Creators Update?

Every build upgrade keeps your previous isntall so you can "rollback" however if you run disk cleanup as administrator you can check the boxes for system files and it will get rid of it.

As said it's probably recovery so you can roll back.

At the top of your C Dr. is there a Windows old folder?Or other folder starting with windows?

Read my post again - I did that. There is no Windows.old folder on my drive. I did everything that I could think of to scrub the junk off my drive, and my Windows 10 setup is still noticeably bigger than before.

After a little more sleuthing, I found a big chunk of it. In Creators Update, I turned off hibernation mode (I use a desktop machine; sleep mode is good enough). Microsoft, <sarcasm> in their infinite wisdom </sarcasm>, decided that I really did need hibernation mode after all, and Fall Creators Update turned it back on. I just ran powercfg -h off from an elevated command prompt and dumped a 12GB hibernation file. Now all I need to do is find where the other 8-18GB of space went....

Mad? Yes, about Microsoft's attitude of "We know what's best for you." That's very presumptuous/arrogant, and all too typical of Microsoft.

If I turn something off, there's a good reason for it. I didn't do it for a whim or as an experiment. If Microsoft is going to ignore my wishes about my computer, then they should have the common courtesy to:
  1. Ask me if I want it turned back on, or at least
  2. Tell me that they turned it back on.
But no. Microsoft runs roughshod over you without a second thought. Now I have to dig through my setup and try to put things back the way that I had them.

It's crap like this that has me seriously eyeing Linux Mint as my primary o.s. At least its developers give you some credit for intelligence instead of treating you like a child. </rant>

Have you got the hidden folders unhidden? Worth checking those out with something like WinDirStat.

Its well documented all over the net that the new update leaves around 30GB. They all suggest to do what youve done. If you dont like it, back everything up, download the creators update and stick it on a flash drive and reformat the computer. Problem should be solved.

If you dont want to do that, well then I guess you're screwed.

Yea, I just installed Windows 10 pro on a new pc last Friday using the Creation Tool to create a bootable USB, and it's the new version 1703. It's only taking up around 20gb total. I saw small changes in the install options, but it seem to be for the better.

Yea, I just installed Windows 10 pro on a new pc last Friday using the Creation Tool to create a bootable USB, and it's the new version 1703.
FYI - The new version is 1709.

I had some spare time at work this morning, so I upgraded my test machine from Creators Update (1703) to Fall Creators Update (1709). Here are the results:

Creators Update
After cleaning up the system files and removing the hibernation file.
125GB of free space

Fall Creators Update
After the upgrade was complete.
112GB of free space

After cleaning up the system files and removing the hibernation file.
129GB of free space

The end result is all over the map: some people have more free space, and others have less. My test machine gained 4 gigs of space. I'd like to know what causes some computers to keep unnecessary files after the upgrade. In the meantime, I'm going to fire-up a disk space analyzer and find out what's hogging my drive.

Aww, you're right!.. Now with that said.. I've not tried 1709... But come to think about it, the difference may be the added Mixed Reality Content they added for all of the Mixed reality hmd's being released this month and the rest coming later. That's very interesting if it does. If so, I wonder if you can uninstall that part if you don't have a Mixed reality HMD?

The Mixed Reality Viewer is listed under "Settings > Apps > Apps & features". However, the Uninstall button is grayed out, and the app the size is only 16KB (not worth the effort).

When you mentioned hibernation file I also checked for it and found 6GB file. So Fall Creators update automatically turned on hibernation because when I installed 1703 I haven't lost any space? Also moved pagefile.sys.

Free 10GB. Now Fall Creators update isn't so bad. :)

Far as I know with every new creator update the windows ISO for 10 gets bigger as it contains All versions even the crap of S

Search for Windows ISO Latest in Google

Though yes if you use the App to contain just your version of windows you won't have this issue

I'm afraid to mention I ended up with another 10.3GB of free space once I removed the .old and the install files and I always have hibernation and sleep disabled and recheck after Windows Update installs. You don't have to believe me on that 10GB but its true blue and more real than Scooby Doo !
