Does that mean that my (my friends old) HDD is bad or can I just buy an OS and install it?
Is there a way to test the HDD without fully booting?

What is the manufacture of the hard disk. The usually have bootable diagnostic disks.

Use this small prog (attachment): it will tell you the health of your HDD.

It should work. Hopefully you know how to burn an ISO image. You can download the ulitmate boot cd (google it). It to has the diagnostic.

I got a Windows XP disk from my grandmother. I'm going to try wiping it.

If its a boot failure it would be a REALLY good idea to run a hard drive diagnostic on it before you reformat. The windows install could fail due to a damaged drive and it will be a lot of wasted time. Or you could get XP installed only to have instability or the problem reoccur in the near future.

You can use a non-manufaturer diagnostic on your drive, although the manufaturer is preferred. Seatools is a good one. Ultimate Boot CD has plenty of options and its free!

Do you only have this HD in your system? Otherwise, just an idea, check the jumper settings... Like my comp gets confused somehow if two hds are on master...

It is in my friends old computer. There is only one HDD in it.

Ultimate Boot CD won't work either.

You guys think I need a new HDD?

What didnt work? Were you able to boot the disk and start the diagnostic?

No, I wasn't able to boot either disk. Only: BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

Did you burn the disk correctly? Is your bios configured to boot off the CD drive first?

How do you burn a disk correctly? YES, the BIOS boots from a CD and only a CD.

You burn it as a disk image (the data is in the iso), dont just drag and drop the file to the disk.

Oh...Umm...Yeah...no...I didn't do that...I just dragged and dropped it. My B!

How do you burn and .iso as an image on a CD?

Harsh guy...Imma noob...pity some.

clear the CMOS that got it to go away on one of my rigs

That might work...I got the Diagnostic to work, though.

:-) Good luck, let us know what it finds out
