Disk Boot Failure!

Does that mean that my (my friends old) HDD is bad or can I just buy an OS and install it?
Is there a way to test the HDD without fully booting?

What is the manufacture of the hard disk. The usually have bootable diagnostic disks.

Just select the HDD that your friend has and download the "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD)"...burn it to a disk, and boot off it.

It should work. Hopefully you know how to burn an ISO image. You can download the ulitmate boot cd (google it). It to has the diagnostic.

If its a boot failure it would be a REALLY good idea to run a hard drive diagnostic on it before you reformat. The windows install could fail due to a damaged drive and it will be a lot of wasted time. Or you could get XP installed only to have instability or the problem reoccur in the near future.

You can use a non-manufaturer diagnostic on your drive, although the manufaturer is preferred. Seatools is a good one. Ultimate Boot CD has plenty of options and its free!

No, I wasn't able to boot either disk. Only: BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

How do you burn a disk correctly? YES, the BIOS boots from a CD and only a CD.

You burn it as a disk image (the data is in the iso), dont just drag and drop the file to the disk.
