I had from time to time the following problem lately: when I boot my PC, it showed many blue dots all over the screen while booting, and when the "Welcome" screen appeared, the desktop didn't enter, and the monitor went completely black. It first happened when gaming, the game froze, the screen went black and it showed several green dots, and it didn't respond to any commands, I had to restart the PC. Also, I use the Sapphire Trixx program in order to raise the fan speed, and I noticed that after restart, the speed dropped from 45% - the way I set it - to 19 or 18%, something like that. I believe my graphics card got overheated, its temperature usually is around 70 degrees Celsius when not gaming, and it reaches about 80, 82 or 82 degrees Celsius while gaming. Why did this happen? Do I need to change the paste/repaste my card?

This. GPU-Z won't tell you anything. The artifacts you describe are text book VRAM issue.

Then how do I know that it's the VRAM that has gone bad? I thought it was the paste, which needed to be replaced. If it is indeed a VRAM problem, why do games still work?

Clean it and repaste. Underclock the card. If that doesn't help, let the card rest after a long game-rendering filled life.

As SKBARON said underclock it specifically the VRAM if the artifacts stop you have your answer.

Thank you, but how do I "underclock" it? What do you mean by that exactly? I use the program Sapphire Trixx in order to raise the speed of the fan. I never overclocked the card with any program, so sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by "underclocking"....

You can use TriXX do to it. Just lower the clocks a few MHz at a time and see if it solves the problem.
