I use Adaptive Sync most of the time, and for competitive multiplayer, Fast Sync, along with a hard 120 fps cap in RTSS.

Adaptive sync methods deny the use of monitor strobe, which almost eliminates motion blur. Enjoy your precious and overpriced Gsync, Mr. Elite, I prefer high motion resolution/clarity @ 120 fps/hz. Joke's on you lol. But then again, with a GTX 970, what other choice you got

Still, achieving a steady 120 fps is certainly not possible on 3570K. Even 7700K/8700K have a hard time pushing GPU like GTX 1080 or faster to +95% utilization at 1080p, which is required to get them running at over 120 fps.
And not possible on GTX 1080 either if you play some new, grahpically demanding games.

a monitor with g-sync and ulmb is the best way to go since you can switch between the two.

100-120 fps in Overwatch, similar results for Dota 2. Fast Sync sorts out the dips, I never see tearing. I have tried a Gsync monitor, and I honestly do not understand why people pay for it, when you could pay for strobing backlight and higher quality monitor instead - or a bigger GPU.

I'm even reluctant to part with my current 1080p monitor even though I would really want to go 27 inch/1440p/120hz, simply because its such a good image and I don't see this quality of VA panel anywhere anymore - its all 3000:1 static or lower, mine does 5000:1

Dishonored 2, Mass Effect Andromeda, Watch Dogs 2, Deus Ex MD - examples of games I played at 1440p, usually with 70-90 fps, that g-sync makes better. No tearing + perfectly smooth. Strobing is only good for 1080p, and even then more demanding games will stutter when framerate drops and fps/hz are out of sync.

Those are the competitive games I play, and where the high refresh counts the most.

I barely skip any title, and as long as I keep FPS above 60, no tear, no use for Gsync, and there has been not a single game where I drop below 60. Benefit of 1080p. New demanding games at v high or ultra run 65-90 fps.

@cucker tarlson we can have a long, long discussion on Gsync, to each his own, I see why adaptive sync is seen as a benefit, but its not for me, knowing the benefits of strobe and just tweaking games for a decent min. FPS value instead. When I can't reliably hold 60 min. FPS is the moment I start looking at upgrades. And you're right - my 3570k is now the main issue in some cases, and it's gonna go soon.

Regardless, the 'pleb' statement, for avoiding adaptive sync in favor of other tech, makes no sense and rather points at a lack of knowledge of other options.

Note also that ULMB is a slightly simpler, less refined form of strobe than what my monitor uses. Its nice to have both in a monitor but I very much doubt you'll be constantly switching modes at all in practice. And it all costs money - when I see the average price of a Gsync monitor and what you get in terms of panel quality, Im really not interested 99% of the time.

OFC you can use a fixed 120hz monitor at 60 fps, people have been doing this for years. Still, keeping fps in sync with hz provides a much smoother experience for the eye.

Yes, but mainly not for saving power, I use it to reduce artifacts or tearing if a game has one.

No, if the game does better with it unlocked(CSGO, Dota 2, most competitive games, etc)

Some form of it. If a game has wild swings in FPS or weird frame times I kinda use some form of locking so it gives stable consistent frame times

In short, All choices, It depends on the game

Of all 2015 or newer games I have:

only DOOM and Mad Max can run stable +120 fps at 1440p with max settings. The rest are mostly in the 75-90 fps range. That's why I'm holding off a 1080Ti upgrade for something faster, 1080 is holding up pretty well and to really feel the difference I'd like to see +130 fps on games I'm running around 80. 1080Ti can't do that and I don't wanna go 1080p, 24" 1440p looks terrific, sharp AF.

I got XB21YU 24" 1440p 165Hz g-sync (with ulmb) at the same price as GTX 1070s go here, so not a bad deal considering normal 1080p 144hz panels without g-sync sell around GTX 1060 6GB price.

If your GPU utilization is at +95% now you're not going to see much difference. If it drops below 90% then 8700K will fix that giving you a framerate boost.


I forgot Shadow Warrior 2. Great game, runs at +100 fps pretty much all the time maxed out. Highly recommended. Old school looter shooter with a great soundtrack

then you'd not gain anything, but 8700K will be able to achieve same fps at lower cpu usage, which means lower temps and lower noise levels. 7700K, while slower than 8700K at 1080p in CPU tests, will still drive current gen/next gen GPUs fine.

You gotta recognize the CPU tests are done at lower resolution in CPU intensive scenes. They rarely represent more than a couple of scenes from a game where the CPU is really under heavy usage. If you have a g-sync monitor then you'd most likely not even notice those framerate dips, unless you can tell 130 fps from 140 fps.

8700K is packing so much power that you might have some fun with it recording your gameplay, it should be able to run games and record them at the same time without a hiccup. I've had so much fun with ansel while playing andromeda that I'm sure I'd sure enjoy recording my gameplay. There are so many epic things that you'd have to replay the game to see them again, but not if you record it.

I limit maximum frame-rates to 140 FPS if the in-game FPS limiter allows me to. If it doesn't, then I use RivaTuner's FPS limiter instead. I do this to prevent going over G-Sync's ceiling.

Rivatuner is not a good solution to limit fps, it produces some tearing/artifacts. Better leave v-sync on, the lag @144fps is almost non perceivable. Or use fast sync.
