Its supposely doing something, like torrenting, folding, wcging etc. I'm asking this because I will soon have 2 decent PC, i already have 2 but one is a 1.8 P4...
I want to start a decent network on my home (gigabit), with my Core2Duo being a home server capable system being almost always on.
But the thing is my mom get me all afraid of it spontaneously starting a fire. While I know she is being like moms usually are, I was wondering if you people have similar concerns.

The house is fairly old, the circuits are not that new. But not ancient hehe

I always leave my stuff on. I left my rig on for crunching almost all of last week whenever I was gone or asleep.

If she's worried about starting a fire, she should be more concerned about the dryer or refrigerator. Relatively, speaking, a computer doesn't pull much current.

I leave my computer on 24/7. That said it's always doing something productive like F@H or WCG.

Damn how didnt i think about the refrigerator earlier, i think that will convince her. Also building a PC with quality PSUs i think it should be fairly safer than most other electronics

I usually leave my laptop on pretty much 24/7 i use it to download my torrents, & folding n what not.

My dad would start complaining if i left my main pc on 24/7 -this power house would start draining the grid in no time.

I turn my computer off when I am not using it. Not because of concern of fire, but for power savings at home. I have, however, left it run for long periods when I was oding something that require it to be on.

The computers on the network I manage at work are on 24/7/365.

The chance of a fire starting from your computer is very minimal. If something shorts out internally, the PSU should kick out. If for some reason the PSU didn't and the thing drew more amperage than the house outlet can supply, the breaker in your home should trip. If everything fails horribly and the house burns down, just hope that your parents homeowners insurance will get you a new i7 system. :toast:

Fire?

I had a computer burst into flames. Granted it sat in a corner for a year gathering dust, and the PSU was faulty (shorted out), and I did specifically tell my cousin, "The computer is broke, leave it alone til I fix it".

A little later I get a call from my dad about the computer being on fire and what was I doing. I politely told him that I told my cousin to leave my stuff alone and I haven't been at the house in 2 hours.

Even under this extreme example (short in PSU, with so much dust in it, it looked like mud), add one stupid person with no knowledge of computers....or common sense only equaled out to a small blue flame that burned for about 4 seconds.

P.S. I use to live on a dirt road, I take very good care of my stuff. Not that thing though, I bought a new PSU and sold it for $100 bucks.

I just leave mine on let it go into sleep mode after a while. but then again i have herd leaving your computer on 24/7 shorten the life of it because some parts such as fans have that estimated time of life.

I usually turn it on when I wake up and off when I go to bed. If I go somewhere for a few hours in between, I usually don't turn it off unless I'm pretty sure I won't be coming back until at least tomorrow.

WCG is running so it isn't just wasting electricity.

Any task that lasts longer than 16 hours, I put my server on it (including torrents) which is running 24/7.

The only thing flamable in a computer is dust. No dust = no fire.

For the electrical bill, I prefer to turn off the pooter when I'm out. i7 rig consumes too much to leave it 24h on.

Yeah, my apartment is already a very hot place, and in one room I got 2 comps and the PS3. In my parents basement I left it on and never noticed it since that was a large and cool area.

We ended up having to get a cooling system for ours.. But we haven't used it much since we got a bluray drive for our HTPC.

Mines out for warranty right now, I'm thinking about picking up fans for the top and back, I would rather just WC the thing, but it's on warranty, so maybe later :D
