I think it's ok. Becuase is part of its correct evolution as a brand. The brand name doesn't matter while they focus on final products are still competitive, well made and fair priced. Anyways, we all know AMD graphics are powered/designed by ATi.

Personally I could care less but I'm very concerned about it possibly being a poor business decision.
But in all honesty not a lot from ATI or AMD for years has seemed to be a solid business decision besides merging.

It's like they have a monkey for a CEO.

It is going to confuse a lot of buyers though, although at least they kept the Radeon name, that would have been utter stupidity to get rid of.

It's going to be funny watching folks trying to sell those "ATI" cards on Craigslist to the masses of folks who don't know any better. The ad would go "Get your hands on one of the last remaining ATI cards ever produced 5870 for just a mere $2000 - act now - operators are standing by. You could easily sell it on ebay morons for 3 times that!

ATI still exists, obviously the name is still registered.
And not many of the employees changed, in fact it wouldn't surprise me if they kept the ATI board of directors as well just labeling it as a sub corp, at least up until this point, and they might still leave it.

I can relate, but it's going to be really bad for your average consumer, I literally have customers say they only buy GeForce cards or Radeon cards... And I roll my eyes and go yeah, and there is the proof that you know the difference.

The business does not. Trademarks don't make graphic cards, businesses do. As such, trademarks mean nothing to me.

"I literally have customers say they only buy GeForce cards or Radeon cards..."

Exactly: Radeon or GeForce. How many people outside of technology circles even know if whether or not NVIDIA makes Radeon and ATI/AMD makes GeForce? The Radeon is what is important to them, not the ATI. Radeon carries far more brand recognition than AMD or ATI does.

I think it was long overdue, I was actually surprised they didn't do this when they acquired ATi

If i`m not mistaken when AMD got ATI back in 07 they switched the sing out front of the main building with AMD on it.I`m talking about the Markham location.SO it is no more buying ATI with AMD logos all over it.Look at your 4800 and 5800 series cards.

PS also means i get stuck removing my avatar to the new logo.

So this means my old 29000xt is worth something to collectors now?

While that's true, for each person who thinks Radeon and GeForce there is an equal amount of people who think ATI, Nvidia who don't know what has happened.

GM doesn't change the name of all their sub corps to GM for good reason.
Some people still think there is a difference....

I quote myself for my view:

This is too bad. Although I guess it is a good PR move to make AMD seem bigger. Now when you buy a laptop, you can have an Intel processor and an AMD GFX sticker. Very clever as AMD will become more well known.

Just in time for the new AT.....cough...AMD GPU's to be put into the next line of Apple computers. Though I have mixed feelings about that crowd being part of the family so to speak.

They did because the government forced them to during bankruptcy. Maintaining multiple brands ultimately costs a lot of money that doesn't pay for itself unless there is, in fact, a great deal of diversity between the brands. GM did not have that diversity which is why the brands went poof (e.g. Pontiac). The same will soon be happening to AMD with ATI GPUs integrated into AMD processors. The diversity is going away so the brand should too. NVIDIA did the same thing with Ageia (integrated PhsyX into NVIDIA GPUs and now it is only NVIDIA).

GM was (maybe still is) stupid; AMD clearly is not (at least not in this regard). AMD did what made sense.

I'm an Intel user but use ATI graphics, and yes I am acknowledging AMD own ATI now and yes I acknowledge Fusion and all that faff, but I don't like the idea of an Intel Core i7 with an Intel X58 paired up with an AMD card. I just feel more comfortable calling it an ATI card.

Plus it's always been ATI vs NVIDIA to me (of course looking at the performance of Sandy Bridge it's now official: ATI vs Intel vs NVIDIA).

AMD's only smart move was to purchase ATI. If anything, AMD should rebrand and call themselves ATI... since ATI is the brand with the better reputation and higher brand-value.

My sentiments exactly :shadedshu

As I type this on my AMD CPU/Nvidia GPU powered laptop.

Ok so now that "Radeon" is the main identifier (I just can't see myself saying "AMD card" for some reason) how the hell is it actually pronounced? Ray-dee-un? Ray-don? Ro-dee-un (you know like in Star Wars)? Does anyone actually know?

Oh you know you've always wondered too! :p

Huh? What does Disney own in the technology manufacturing business? Nothing I am aware of. To be blunt AMD/Intel can never be under one roof because it would violate monopoly laws for several industry areas. It simply cannot happen.

I wonder how well Disney CPU's can overclock.

But ya as thelaughingman said, it's pretty much impossible. You can't have one company dominate such a huge market.
