KIS 2009, and glad.

Despite being 'careful' i recently opened up my router to DMZ to my gaming PC while hosting a far cry 2 server. Within 15 minutes (bad luck i guess) i'd had several virus/work attacks from chinese IP's, mostly the "helkern" worm.

Without kaspersky covering my ass, even with being 'careful' with files, it'd be too late and my systems would be screwed right now.

edit: adding some information that i've found from other AV's recently.

Nod32: used to be my AV.has problems with P2P applications, including games. I know i was unable to play company of heroes with it running, and Utorrent recently released fixes to try and work around nod32's odd behaviour.

AVG: You know... i end up removing this from a lot of PC's. It finds *lots* of false positives. On several new game releases, and program releases i tend to see people complaining about viruses - in the end they're all AVG users and they have to wait for an update to fix it. A good antivirus program never gets a false positive.

acctualy the it was smart security that had the main issue, its EASY to fix, as to the problem with nod32 AV only, IF you use web filtering( i dont ) you just put the apps you dont want filtered like utorrent into an exception, takes a few seconds like maby 5 clicks total.

AVG is HORRIBLE, Avast is better(infact the curent version seems damn decent for free), avira antivir is nice to if you want free.

as to god av never getting faulse positives, not quite true, but they are RARE

see KIS and NOD32 will see a few things as FP's like some game trainers and some mod tools because alot of trogens use the same keyloger/monitor to do their thing as these apps use to capture your hotkey clicks.

nod32 and kis have both marked ligit apps as viruses, like Hitman pro getting hit by kis reacently :)

happens to everybody at times, its how quick they fix their fuckups, AVG wont unflag an app in my exp, it at one point was detecting crossover (linux/mac app that lets u run windows apps easly on mac/linux os's) as a infected.....annoyed me to no end :/

Geez, all an antivirus will do is bog down your PC. I dont and never used an antivirus bloatware throughout my PC life. Have not reformatted my pc because of viruses or rogue apps.

Just dont download and run any stuff from the net and dont use torrented apps and your all good.

Well in my case that is.. I have a gaming rig. On my workstation I do have an antivirus.. Kaspersky

nod32 has effectivly zero impact on system perf, norton/mcafee/avg on the other hand I would agree about, they tend to bog things down, but any true geek would be ashamed to use those products :)

have fun with the network worms. my gaming PC was recently attacked, and i didnt run any 'suspicious programs'

People who say AV arent neccesary, really need to see whats out there these days... ever heard of blaster, or helkern? they attack via the network, they dont need you to click anything.

I have been a Norton user in the past. My internet provider comes with Mcafee for free so I have switched to that. I also use Hazard Shield.

I'll check on it. If it does not destroy my CoD4 performance, or destroy my save game files, or anything that wont let me permit to install games, or anything that will not let me boot my OS so that I can waste my time playing games then Im good :D

Oh I dont think any serious worm would want to hamper your performance or make it's presence felt in general...:) their main purpose would be forming the hives (botnets) that are found in service of the morally bankrupt. Aiding in corporate DDoS attacks, helping black hats proxy their way to safety, CC fraud (yes including yours).

Cherish the worm that makes it's presence felt on a unprotected pc, then at least you do something about it.

I've been using AVG 8 free on my systems without any problems so far. I know that Avast used to or still does have problems when using it with online games like Guild Wars or WOW.

I was told to try Rising Antivirus by a fellow computer tech friend, but I haven't tried it yet.

AVAST, Router and Windows firewalls, Spybot, SpyDoctor, Adware, Malwarebytes (just trying it now), etc. Had Norton Symantec and McAffee previoulsy and both slowed the compooter down, but McAfee was free and you could see and trace all the attacks and probes of your ports and report them, so, I spent hours doing this, reporting them. Many were from China and some Russian, but many also were from Europe and the USA and Japan.

I heard NOD 32 was good but haven't tried it yet.

Problem is that some people are simply viruses and pests themselves and need to be quarantined or even erradicated since they are psychotic criminals, low-lifes, thieves, perverts, whackos etc. Spray 'em with RAID or BLACK FLAG.

well heres a fun one for ya: nod32 declares left4dead (the new steam zombie game) a virus. quite amusing, it deletes the .exe file.

the demo works fine for me under Eset Smart Security Business Edition (nod32 with firewall)

i hear 2.7 have/had that problem, im sure eset will fix it with a patch if they havent already.

i have seen AVG delete unreal engine maps because it thought they where viruses, funny part was that AVG took a week to patch it and my client wouldnt change AV's because somebody at compusa told him it was the best......so he kept reinstalling the game then having the maps delted and the game crash HAHA!!!!

Here is Eset Nod32 website with prices:

http://www.eset.com/purchase/

They seem to be getting more expensive, so Ebay shopping is in order and I have seen regular Home User Nod32 editions (withour firewall I think but am not sure) going for about $25 to $30.

I would get one but I am cheap so use the freebie AV stuff and a router and stock Windows software firewall.

Interesting how some AV programs cause problems with game files or whatever. I luckily never had that problem yet though. Bummer.
