Do you think AMD's new Phenom II is able to gain some substantial market share? Maybe even rival Intel's new Core i7 ?

It is hard to get exited about some thing that we have from intel and more 4GHz and higher OC and more efficency compared MHz to MHz.
Maybe if the rumors instead if 4ghz air were 5GHz but than again maybe I`m looking too much :D

Somewhat skeptical about how it stacks up against even Core 2. Overclocking potential is one thing, the performance impact when pushed to the max, when compared to competing Core 2 chips pushed to their max is another.

It doesn't really do anything for me. I'm upgrading to an E8600 3 months ahead of my planned date, but the price was right.

I plan my next rig (currently building) to tie me over for at least 2 years without upgrading heavily again.

I built my whole rig based on the performance rumors of the new Phenoms. Water cooling with enough capacity for a TEC in the future.

^ nice link.

Id love to think AMD can re take the market, i really do, being first introduced to computers using an AMD processor, so ill always have a soft spot for them. But knowing Intel, theyll bounce right back and own them again.

No offense, but I don't think some of the options available reflect the question. I'm very happy with my current set up but I'm also excited about the how it's going to perform. I get excited about new hardware as I'm a geek, that's what I do.

:D

Looking forward to TPU's review(s).

I'm excited, but mostly because I'm itching to upgrade my current machine for "on the cheap" to a more 64 bit friendly setup. I'm planning to get 4 extra gigs of ram and a Phenom II or, if prices come down and Phenom II is out of reach, Just a Phenom. That should last me another 2 years on the CPU side. I need the quad coreness for increased rendering speed of video and 3d especially.

However, this thing is not catching core i7. It might catch fast last gen quaddies from intel...but thats also pushing it a little I think.

I'm excited and cautiously optimistic. I'm hoping for something reminiscent of the 939 days. That was some fun overclocking. I'm not deluding myself into thinking that it will match i7 performance. I will be very happy if it performs even slightly better that C2Q. I've got my PII 940 on pre-order, and my Biostar GX3 is on the way.

Release dates are still confusing. I know it's supposed to be January, but the company I preordered it from says Intel is suppose to ship to them on 12/27.

yea i'm kinda excited but just to see what AMD has done to improve phenom architecture and performance, i'm very happy with my current and even more so after this xmas, i'll be set for another year before i upgrade anything. I hope it tops c2x line, so that it's in between c2d/c2q and i7, and with their prices they should sell decently.

The Phenom is just a lil slower than C2D/Q, under 5% clock vs clock.

The Phenom don't overclock good, It's 65nm, and the product wasn't optimized (rushing releases).

The Phenom II, It will perform better than the current Phenom, because It's 45nm, and because of the larger cache, and because of the same reason, it will OC better.

I expect Phenom II would match the Yorkfield performance clock vs clock or slower ~5%.
I expect the Phenom II BE would reach 3.7GHz under air , and 3.5GHz for non-BE CPU, running 24/7.

AMD will gain back what It lost in the CPU market, but AMD won't gain anything higher than what they lost. I don't expect Phenom II to turn the table, but I have hope for the 6 cores version.

Here in Finland a popular internet shop is announcing that Phenom II would be in delivery by 7.1.2009 (920) and 10.1.2009 (940 BE)

It'll be Phenom II or Core i7 for me soon, though I'm going to wait and see the gamut of reviews for Phenom II with gaming before I make a decision.
