For a bit of context, I am trying to get this older system to run Windows 10. I am getting the error that my CPU does not support compare exchange 128 and it cannot install. I am on Windows 7 64 bit trying to upgrade to Windows 10 64 bit.

I have read this may be because of a bios setting or older bios version. Is there a setting I need to enable or does this CPU just not support this feature?

I thought this CPU supported all the requirements for Windows 10.

Sempron 3000+ from which platform mate? Socket 462? Windows 7 will be as good as it gets then.

Are you sure you are on Win7 64bit? That error is also related to cpu not supporting 64bit arch.

Which socket Sempron 3000+ is it? If socket A, its 32bit, if 754 or am2 its 64bit.

The only Sempron 3000+ that doesn't support 64 bit is the one for Socket A, all the others support 64 bit whether it's Socket 754, 939 or AM2/AM2+.
If you are trying it with a Socket A setup, you'll never get any 64 bit OS to work, all other sockets from 754 onward are good.

CMPXCHG16B was introduced in a later revision of the x86-64 arch.

Only on Windows 8.1 was that instruction made a hard requirement. Hence why 64-bit Windows 7 still works on OP's 64-bit Sempron.

It's due to lack of instruction sets and newer security features that you may not be able to get the w10 update over w7.
Le: I've tried to install w10 on a single core based Athlon 64 (socket 939) with no success.

It's socket 754

Are there any 754 CPUs that support this instruction?

Win 7 isn't a problem for 754 but Win 10 probrably is.
I've never tried a Win 10 install on Socket 754 before, one thing that comes to mind is the amount of RAM available - Each OS has a certain requirement for how much RAM is needed and the max I've ever known 754 to run is 3GB's and that's with all RAM slots they normally have populated.

I've never seen or known a Socket 754 system to have 4 RAM slots so there you go.
I believe there are a few 2GB sticks of DDR but hard to find and probrably expensive too if they exist.

Its a 2 slot board with 2x1gb sticks installed. Should be enough to run Windows 10, just not fast.

You need a DDR2/AM2 platform (at least), to have support for Win10 x64 (or 8.1 x64).
Or in other words : A revision F of K8 procesors.
Example :
WEI mini.png

If you want Win10 on that PC, you are limited to 32-bit versions (which require only NX-bit [XD-bit for Intel] and SSE2 to be present).

I mean... WiN7 will work ok but WiN10 needs a few newer things that the cpu doesn't support. Now you could go to Linux per say Linux MINT

For that CPU, Windows 7 is your limit for a good performing OS, though Windows XP should really be your target OS for that platform. You would be well served to upgrade your RAM to 3GB or 4GB with 2x512MB or 2X1GB as long as you have extra RAM slots.

If you are wanting to run a modern OS like Windows 10, a Core2/AthlonX2 should be the types of CPU's you should view as a minimum starting point.

I have a much more modern Windows 10 system that I use every day.

My end goal here is actually to try and get Windows 11 installed on the oldest possible hardware just for a fun project, not to get a usable system. From what I see, once you disable the checks the real minimal requirements for CPU are very similar to Windows 10 64 bit. I wanted to work my way up in steps to 11.

I was expecting this to work but I guess I'm going to have to try something else.

From what I see, Even tho Intel was late to release 64 bit cpus, all of their 64 bit cpus support CMPXCHG16B, and they had CPUs with support for this well before AMD did.

Ah, fair enough. I've done that. I got Win11 running on a Sony VAIO laptop with a Core2 Duo T7200. It ran surprisingly well.

There's no harm in trying. It'll be interesting to see if you can make it work!

Regardless, only 65nm and later CPUs from Intel support 64-bit editions of Windows 8.1/10 ;)

Latter one is supported by G1 and B0 of Pentium 4/Pentium D respectively.
However, former support was added only in 65nm versions.
PS. PrefetchW is part of 3DNow! instructions from K6-2 days.

Hmm, okay
You can get a W10 shell for W7 so it looks all fancy and has all the cool sounds and stuff. I know this isn't the same thing as running W10, but believe me, on socket 754, you would eat all of the resources just for the operating system. W10 is just too heavy for stuff that old.

I would like to see some screen shots though. Not too often you see guys with socket 754 any more!!

Windows 7 alone was basically unusable on the sempron, and that was with a Samsung SSD and the max 2gb ram supported by the board.
