Does anyone know if I will be able to put Ice Lake in my Z370?

My plan at the moment is to just sell my i5-8400 cheaply and take a heavy loss on it when I get a 8 core Ice Lake 16 thread chip in my hands this time next year. Surely Intel wouldn't do it twice in a row, a mobo switch?

Best guess is yes, Intel is still doing two CPU generations per chipset generation like they have every chipset generation since P55.

I anticipated z370 to be a one and done dead end chipset(only for 8th gen), i still bought one anyway, but I'd be surprised if they support next gen with it

Yeah, I'm not sure why you said Intel wouldn't do it twice in a row. Intel has never only released a single CPU generation on a mainstream chipset.

I think Z390 will be specifically for Ice Lake with some new fearures(read more PCI-E lanes) but the new CPUs will work with Z370 too.

They needed a pinout change for the 6-core parts, somehow I doubt they won't need another for the 8 cores.

Kaby Lake and Skylake shared a chipset generation. Z170 and Z270 were the same generation, despite the numbering. Z270 was just a refresh of Z170, just like Z97 was a refresh of Z87 and Z77 was a refresh of Z68.

They designed the original 1151 socket to power only up to 4 cores. The extra pins in the new socket are to provide extra power for the new cores, it should power 8-core chips.

@newtekie1 That is good logic I had not thought of before, really looking forward to Ice Lake now, will be a simple BIOS update most likely before I can pop it in is all. I do a lot of compression stuff, so going from 6 core no threads to 8 cores 16 threads with higher IPC will be very nice indeed.

Makes sense.
IMO the 8400 is the perfect overall CPU, with a high core count and a very good IPC with 3.8GHz all core turbo while using only 65W and at an acceptable price.

Considering people have coffee lake working on Z170/Z270 I wouldn't see a reason why they wont, but then again after all the spectre/meltdown stuff I have no idea what intel will be doing with a redesign this go around.
